My wife and I are thinking about spending a week at this well-recommended site. The only thing that concerns us are reports of traffic noise from the adjacent main road and roundabout. Can anyone give us any idea just how bad this can be, on a scale of say 10, please? Also, can you choose your pitch there, or are you just allocated one?

We'd be very grateful for any help/advice.

Many thanks,

Graham

Hi Graham

We went there last year and are due to go back for a week starting over the Bank Holiday, with 10 being the noisiest I would rate the site 2,you are allocated your pitch but they always seem to try to let you have your preference, you will probably need to book early if you would like a particular date, site seems very good to us.

I put a review on this link. Hopefully you might be able to see it, if not you need to be a member of the forum...

Regarding the traffic noise, yes, there is some and the nearer the entrance the worse it is because traffic is changing down/accelerating for the A39 roundabout. We have been twice and it's never bothered us and if in the van you're not aware of it.

Lovely site and wouldn't hesitate to go again. It's close to Truro and Falmouth is 6 miles and the north Cornish coast about 12 miles, ideally situated.

I forgot to add that if you look at their site plan you can ask if the pitch is available, if not they will tell you which are and you can book it that way. We had a fully serviced pitch which was a good size with no filling aquarolls or emptying wastemasters.

graham, whilst i was staying in cornwall in 2006 we check alot of touring sites out including cc sites and commercial. carnon down is by far the best site we have ever seen and weve stayed at alot.

the pitches are huge the site is immaculate and the facilities are second to none. the access is so easy.

for the last 2 years we have booked and then something always happens and we have had to cancel it. im really gonna try and book it for 2009. im trying to get my in laws to go as they have just bought there first van and get it hopefully next week.

good luck

Hi Graham

we stayed there last November and whilst the site is by a busy A road I can't say I really noticed it other than when I walked the dogs on the walk that borders the road itself.

As said lovelly site and well placed. It is spread out over 2 fields the second of the 2 is far more open with fewer hedging and planting. But they were really putting alot of effort improving this. They were in the midst of building a new amenities block in the second field along with what seemed landscaping as well.

Many thanks for your prompt and helpful replies. Now, if it ever stops raining in here Gloucestershire, and if they can put the A40 back together again in time, we may well get to Carnon Downs.

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham,

We have been to carnon Downs many times. Echo what everyone else says, it really is a great site.

If you look on their website you will see that they have a diagram of the layout under 'Our Park'.

The ones with the loudest noise from the main road are in 'yellow' and round by reception.

We have stopped on these pitches but, due to the noise, prefer the section called 'Jubilee' In fact Jubilee pitch 4 is where we are likely to be found when we are down there!

The noise of the road is not horrendous but is a lot more pronounced in the sections mentioned above so go for one of the others if it likely to be an issue. It wouldn't stop us going though.

Absolutely nothing to criticize at Carnon Downs apart from it being hard to book as it is so popular!

Hope this helps

Regards

Steve

Hi Graham

A40 is not too bad,if you look at Over Farm they have a CL you could use right in the middle of the roadworks!!!! I was through there today absolutely tipping down, and all that effort for a new bus lane.
