Hi all

I have a 13 year old Bailey and want to replace the carpet. I have seen the advice to cut it out and use the old carpet as a template to cut the new one which is great but... I can see that the carpet extends under some of the cupboards and wondered what will happen when the carpet is cut on the outside of the cupboard? Should I try and get the new carpet under the cupboard and if so what is the best way to do this? Also how is the old carpet likely to be held down and what is the best way to hold the new carpet down please?

Thanks

Andre'

Hi Andre

I replaced the carpet in our old caravan which also had the problem of the carpets going under the cupboards. Have a look inside the bed lockers and there might be little blocks which are screwed down. If so undo the screws and the carpet might pull out. If there are no blocks you might find that the old carpet just pulls out leaving a slight gap under the units. If so you should be able to just cut the carpet a little larger and then be able to work the surplus under the units. I did this with a very fine screwdriver which did the trick. I didn't secure the carpet as I found the units held it securely enough. If you did want to stick it down I would use Copydex or something not too strong in case you may want to remove it for any reason. I personally found the carpet with a felt backing was easier to work with as it could be bent more easily to push under the cupboards. The effort was worthwhile as the transformation to the caravan was amazing. Good luck.

Hello Andre,

I also replaced our carpet and like yours it was fixed under various units. As already suggested by Chrissylizzie check how these units are fitted and unscrew them if possible. Our carpet had also been stapled down which meant removing a lot of staples. I re fitted it using a similar method and re fixed the units. When we replaced our carpet I also fitted underlay. The difference this has made is amazing. I also used a felt back carpet.

However, a few points to note. To make it as easy as possible remove as much as you can from the caravan. Ours is stored at home so this was easier. I even removed the bathroom door and the centre drawer unit. When unscrewing the bed bases make sure you mark the positions or measure the gap as when we next used it the gap was wrong (to wide) and the bed collapsed! Around the door I removed the plastic tray and fitted the carpet under it and under the door frame. At the kitchen I had to cut the carpet and fix closely to the unit. Around the fridge I was able to lift the unit remove the old carpet and fit the new under it. Also start at one end (front I did) and keep it tensioned and don't fit any units in place until you have the carpet laid and are happy that it is smooth. Finally get a good sharp knife with lots of spare blades. Take your time. Good luck.
