Carver water heater ( Bailey Pageant 2000)

Hi All

Am I right in thinking these water heaters will run on electricity alone, We ran out of gas at the weekend, the red light came on on the thermostat, the only way I could get it to go again was to put a new gas bottle on. Best Regards Phil

I would fully expect a 2000 model to have mains 240v heating as well as gas, they are indeed designed to work independently of each other, or together for faster heating times.
If the electric heating is not working then the over temperature thermostat may have tripped out, on 2000 models the normally exposed red button to press and reset is hidden behind a little flap, this is on the white plastic box situated on the inboard end of the water tank, right next to your feet!

oh useful tip.... the electric tripped out on our carver water heater in our '97 Pageant. Dont just press the button as this doesnt reset it. Press and hold for a few seconds and that resets the heater

Hello Craig

The trip on the Carver uses a switch with a bimetalic bais. Provided the heater has cooled down enough, then you only need to push the reset button once firmly. There should be no need to keep it pressed. If it doesn't reset, then this means the either the heater is still too hot, or the trip switch is faulty.

Very true John, if the tank is empty and causes the overheat thermostat to trip out, then this takes only a few seconds, once the power is removed, residual heat stored in the bulk of the cast aluminium element is still moving toward the thermostat and still raising the temperature.
The thermostat resets about 20degs below it's tripping value of 90C, so considering the element will initially be well above 90C, the time taken to reset could be considerable.
The thermostat itself is quite robust, sometimes constant tripping, over time, can cause high resistance through the mechanics of the stat, this will have the effect of self heating the stat and causing it to act prematurely. However this is far more common on the 'normal' 65C stat which is constantly making and breaking, this generally resulting in the maximum temperature of the water reducing below 65C

Ok not that i doubt you guys, but i reset the heater after a trip away when i was cold and drained. And pressing once it just popped back out again. pressed for a second or so and it was fine. I presurised the system and tested and its worked fine since.
