When your hubby replaced the pump did he warm the heat shrink tubing correctly to waterproof the connections as this join sits in the flush water?

Also, why do you not use the correct Thetford aerosol lubricant on the blade and rubber seal?

The guage is operated by a magnet in the holding tank which can stick or become dislodged if shaken vigorously when cleaning.

I've used vaseline on the cassette toilets for years and never had a problem withe the seals as and they work a lot better than silcons that are useless around wet equipment and better than Olive oil that just washes away as well.

I've no idea what the seals are mad of but vaseline has been the most effective, may be it's not rubber!
Sorry Cris,

Vaseline is totally the wrong product to use on natural or synthetic rubber - it penetrates the rubber and causes it to swell - admittedly part of the Vaseline stays on the surface and provides a lubricant action.

If you've had no issues, then you've been lucky.

And WD40 doesn't dry to leave a powdery deposit - WD40 is a light paraffin oil - but it does cause material to leach out of rubber, which after the WD40 has evaporated, remains on the surface. This is similar to the problems some people have been having with blocking gas regulators - synthetic rubber hose and petroleum hydrocarbons.

Agree with rob jax. Speaking from experience I used Vaseline to lubricate my water pump inlet o-rings, over a very short time they swelled and broke. I later read that Vaseline contains petroleum.

Again from experience I used silicon grease on the sealing rubber on my cassette toilet on my last van. Over time this swelled and distorted loosing its seal.

I now use cooking oil with no problems having used it for the last two years.

I will ensure it is olive oil or veg oil as advised.

Taken from Thetfords website regarding seals and what to do with them.

Please note the warning at the end!!

Thoroughly clean the seals and valve blade, using Thetford Seal Lubricant and wipe them over with a cloth or a piece of toilet paper. Repeat the above operation if the seal and blade are dirty or if opening and closing the blade is difficult.

Note! Never use Vaseline or any vegetable oil. These may cause leakage.

hi Liz

guess what! have fixed the loo! my hubby took the pump out and connected to the battery to make sure it worked.when he knew it worked connected the pump back to wires in toilet, made sure all worked but problem was the junction from water pump to original wire. now working sealed bare wires in plastic container and sealed with silicone including coating the wires so waterproof.all ok now! bit long winded but if you understand it may work! all the best
