My wife and I are going to the Sandringham CC Site for two weeks from Saturday July 26th.

Our daughter is due to give birth to our first grandson on August 18th, but as we all know, these things do no always go to plan! My daughter would like her mother at the birth, and as we will only be two hours away from home, this should be OK if baby comes early. The only issue is, the CC site says that not all phone networks have coverage in the site. I phoned the site, and all the warden could tell me is that Orange does not have coverage.

My wife has Virgin and I have vodaphone. Does anyone have any actual experience of site coverage? just in case we get the middle of the night call!!

Many Thanks

We were there recently and my wife has Orange. It is very patchy with a weak signal and sometimes broke up or dis-connected. If she went outside the caravan it was sometimes better. I'm not sure of the other networks but there always seemed to be people talking on their phones away from their vans.

We have been to Sandringham a number of times. Both my wife an I have vodafone mobiles. The signal is not great but we have had no problems. We always pitch on the right hand side of the site served by the larger toilet block, cant comment on signal strength for the other parts of the site.

Many thanks everyone, your responses are very much appreciated.

It seems like there is a good chance that we will be able to keep in contact - We will pick our pitch based on the best signal strength! - that will be a first, most times we pick the one with the weakest signal!

I will post a reply when baby arrives.

Sure that if you explain your dilemma to the wardens they would be happy to relay a message if your daughter was to phone the site landline - if the time of day was reasonable, of course!

We had a similar situation with Rob's parents when we were expecting our third child. They went away to Wales 2 weeks before my due date and they were supposed to be looking after our older boys while I produced! The area they visited has notoriously bad mobile coverage and we found that often text messages could get through even when we couldn't speak on the phone. We had friends on babysitting standby but we were ok as baby was 8 days late!

Good luck and keep us posted.

Just to let everyone know. We managed to complete our holiday without the need to go home for the birth of our first grand child. We did have mobile phone coverage at the site by the way, (about 2 bars on the signal strength indicator - Vodafone and Orange)

Baby Freddie arrived yesterday at 11:45am. 8lb 15oz

Mother and Baby doing fine.

Grandad.
