Change over to 13 pin connector

Just changed my van which has a 13 pin connector. As a quick solution I have got an adaptor for connecting to my cars twin 7 pin sockets. However I want to fit a 13 pin socket to replace the twin sockets on the car, mainly to avoid having to tie up the long cables/adaptor. The dealer who fitted my oringinal twin sockets on the car indicated I would need a complete wiring loom at a cost of £75 plus fitting which seems a bit dear. I would have thought the two existing cables could be routed into a new 13 pin socket plus a new bracket.

Has anyone experience or knowledge on this

last week i took the car in to have the towbar fitted.

I had arranged for a 13pin socket to be fitted,(and using an adaptor to the van twin plugs).

Only to find on arrival that they had run out, so the fitter suggested i have the twin sockets fitted, and return to have the 13pin installed.

As a sweetener he knocked

I cut the two 7 pin plugs off, pulled the cables back into the caravan, shortened them and and them connected to 'chocolate block' connectors in the locker under the front chest of drawers. I then made up a 13 pin connector and cable (from Western Towing)and connected that to the other side of the 'chocolate block' connectors.

Cost was one 13 pin plug and two and a half metres of cable and two 'chocolate connectors.

I had exactly the same thing when I bought my new van. Just took off the two plugs and bought a new europlug. Fed the two cables through and connected the new plug before sealing it all up with silicone sealant. Worked a treat. You have to pay attention when connecting them up is all as the colours of the individual wires are different but the numbers on the pins are very easy to read on the new plug. And of course test it before sealing it all up.

Thanks Graham, have just managed to print off wiring info for the 13 p euro plus the wiring for the twin plugs. I think I will have a go myself.

James I too was told I needed a complete new rewire, however when I pressed the subject the only reason for this is the 13 pin wire has 5 large bore wires in but the 2 x 7 pin only have 2. the fridge should have the larger wire incase it burns out (eu rules) I said its the same fridge as in my old van with 2x7pin so whats the problem. Anyway he told me which wires go where as I was confused with 2 wires (both dont go anywhere) and I did it myself, job done,

If the van catches fire whilst towing Ill let you know

Kevin
