Who did you book with? Which company? Is it one of the longer crossings? Is it the company themselves who are offering 'Caravans go free' or is it with another company?
I suppose you could say you thought you were getting a good price when you booked, so it would still be a good price if you hadn't seen the free caravans offer! It's hard to know what to do - book early, and then find there's a better offer - or wait, and miss out on what you thought was a cheap deal. Bit like with the budget airlines really - the only good price is the one you actually get!

If you booked through Camping Cheques then I'm surprised you didn't check out the details of the Caravans go Free offer when you booked, as it's been running since November. I posted the details here (and on this forum, too, but I can't find the post), on the 8th November 2010.
I'm also surprised that they didn't mention it at the time as they're usually quite good at sorting you out the best bargain.
Perhaps it's because the sailings you've booked don't meet the conditions of the offer - there are quite a few restrictions on dates/times/routes.

You should be able to amend your booking by paying a £10 amendment fee. Change to the cheaper crossing and the balance you will have to pay will be reduced. Your deposit should not be affected. The cheaper sailings are the afternoon (approx 2.30pm) from Portsmouth or 11am from Poole. The return sailing from Caen is 8am or 8.30am but the sailings from Cherbourg may differ - I do not think they do a dailing morning return crossing. We are sailing Poole to Cherbourg and then Caen to Portsmouth in April and also August. On both occasions we have "Caravans go free". Th sailing works out to about £300 return and that is with overheight car and overlength caravan.

That's what I was trying to say in my first post. Obviously you thought you were doing the right thing, and you got the dates you wanted at a price you thought was OK at the time. If you hadn't see the free caravans offer you'd have still thought you'd got a good deal. It's just one of those things that happen.
I suppose you can cancel and look upon it as saving yourself £20 - but you ought to check the availability before doing that to make sure you can get the dates you want. If you can't, then I'd just be inclinded to put it all behind me and not let it spoil your holiday, as Pat says.
