If you are a member of the Caravan Club they have a site at Folkestone. It's Blackhorse Farm and quite close to the motorway. They have special pitches close to the entrance where you're able to leave during the night or early morning. On the other hand several years ago when I was catching the 4am sailing, I stopped for three or four hours on Marine Parade.

is there a cheap overnight stop in or very near to dover, got to catch early ferry.

If you are a CC member you can use Lenacre Court Farm just off the A2 at Whitfield. Plenty of space, you can park away from other outfits, good TV and mobile reception and the site is very quiet. Grass of hard standing. Takes about 15 mins into the docks. You need to book but Mrs Broadley will always do her best to help. £12pn all in inc mains.

Route:
At island on A2 (Esso station and McD's) turn east and bear left behind petrol station. Drive about 1Km (watch the speed bumps) and the road straightens going down hill. As it starts to rise the tarmac changes to pink - take a double back left into Forge Lane. Keep going straight forward, through the narrow bit after the houses, and where the road curves left after the narrow biit go straight on for 10yds and turn right. Turn left through the five-bar gate in front of the house. From the docks (if using M20) go up Jubilee Way and turn right at second traffic island, then follow as above.

Good chippie behind petrol station, Tesco Extra across other side of A2 island, plus steak bar on one of the intermediate islands.

Problem with BHF is that (a) it is a Folkstone and (b) you have to be in by 20:00 if you are leaving early. You can arrive later on the return but you cannot leave until the office is open in the morning.

Another vote for Lenacre Court Farm, but don't tell anyone else! ;)

If you arrive after 10 pm I think it is unlikely you will be away before the office opens but for a single night on a ferry pitch you pay in advance so no chance of not paying.
