We have just found out - thankfully not the hard way - that the EHIC European Health card has an expiry date.

I suggest anyone that has one - and especially if you are planning travel - to check and get a new one ordered (on line) if necessary a.s.a.p..
 
I just updated mine. Expected it to be a hassle but it couldn't have been easier. Just phoned the number and spoke to an automated answering machine - answered all the questions verbally, no pressing buttons! Then when I thought I would have to go through it all again for my wife's card, it asked me if I wanted to renew any other cards. I said "yes", then it asked me to name the person - I said my wife's first name, and it immediately said "right - we'll do hers as well!!!. No difficult questions, no problems whatsoever, and I never spoke with a human being. Both new cards turned up within three days. An amazing piece of technology!
 
I renewed ours nearly a month early a couple of weeks ago "on line" and they new cards arrived 3 days later cannot get much better service than that can you?
 
Glad I spotted this message, just realised today that ours have expired and we leave for France in the morning for 1 month. Have renewed on line and have printed out the e-mail saying they have been renewed so just hope that if we need help, the expired cards plus e-mail will suffice.
 
Well done Woody and thanks - time goes by so quickly these days and I am most grateful for your prompt - ours expired before the next planned trip.

Renewed on-line and very easy - at least one Government website that is very user - friendly.
 
Ours expired before the Last planned trip! October 2009 - good job we didn't need it on our 7 week late spring/summer trip this year.

I knew ours is due to expire in October but your "nudge" prompted me to get on with it online yesterday. As already said a very easy website to deal with.
