I am thinking of binning the old Softex open weave rubbery ground sheet for a breathable close weave type such as Kampa or Bolon. Are the close weave types reasonably durable when used on hard standings?

I have used a Bolon carpet on hardstandings for just over a year, (probably about 40 nights) after about six months it was showing signs of ware so I bought a cheap white pvc tarpaulin to put underneath it. The tarpaulin cost under £10. I lay that out to erect the awning then put the Bolon on top. There have been no further signs of ware to the carpet, and it stays cleaner during our stays.
Obviously when on grass pitches I don’t use the tarpaulin.

We also got a morrocan style one from the nec in 2010. Unlike Dave, we are not so sure, as it is splitting in places.

Hi
We use the Pyramid Luxor which is a very tight weave ground sheet. We have been using it for the past 5 years and its in as new condition and its used for 10 months a year. Its great on grass as its fully breathable and lets the grass grow but not through the weave, great on chippings the only problem I have come across is in Feb,March,Oct and November its a bit cold under foot when you go in the awning bare footed unlike the earlier softer open weave type. Has really took the toll of us, visitors and the husky

Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. Just one question; what are the moroccan carpets from NEC and is there an Internet link?

They're a company from Llanelli - and the website is: http://www.moroccanmatting.co.uk/. We were going to buy some of the old pattern, but I don't like the new versions.
We saw the older pattern outside a motorhome a couple of years ago, and should have bought it then! The designs have changed since. They do look great though, with the right 'colour' vans and awnings!
Cheeky PS - If anyone has one of the old green ones and doesn't like it let me know! I may take it off your hands!

Bought mine at the nec show from a stand. Didn't have a company label and it was quite cheap. Shows you get what you pay for.

Well I have finally got around to buying the new close weave awning groundsheet/carpet and from advice seen on this forum I bought it from Caravanalia. Their range and price were good and I ordered it late morning yesterday received a shipping note 1hour later and it arrived today. Excellent service just as previous posts had said. The package also had usage instructions to reduce the likelihood of damage on hard standing or by sharp objects such as step legs etc.
