Hi

I was just wondering if you can use a combination microwave with grill and convection oven in a caravan.

I have one at home and was considering buying one for my van but I am not sure if it will be too powerful for the electricity supply.

thank you

Lynn

Lynn, I was just looking at teh tech spec for our combi unit and it works out as follows:

Microwave power consumption 1200w = 5a

Microwave power output 800w

Grill power consumption 1000w = 4.2a

Most microwaves draw double the power consumption on start, for a very small amount of time so initially it could draw 10a

With the unit used in dual mode, after start, it will draw 9.2a

Depending on the site supply limit, which can be 6a 10a or 16a,

that would immediately trip the low allowance site supply.

Remember I have not included anything else switched on!!

Now if you add the heater at 2000w, that = 8.5a

Water heater 3.5a

Fridge 0.5a

then you have to add in charger and anything else on 240v

With just the items above without the unknown ones, you would be drawing 21.7a, which is far too much for the supply.

Unless you make sure everything else is OFF, before using the combi, then no, it will not be suitable.

John, thank you for that reminder, but I still use the good old tried and tested BRITISH units, and those that the majority of people understand.

However technically it should be 230 +/- 10%

It is a bit like stating a car runs on a 12v supply, when in fact it is more like 13 or 14v DC

Hello Lynn

Can I ask why you would want to use such a 'unit' on a caravan site? Why not just plump for a 'normal' microwave oven?

Am I missing something here? Didn't Damian say such a unit wasn't really suitable or are you just hoing to make sure other stuff is turned off? I do sympathise, I went through this debate when we had folding campers with no oven. Hope you sort it.

Ive got a microwave in the caravan but I have a combi at home which I much prefer.

I only use the microwave for heating food as I don't like cooking in it.The combi works like an proper oven which I don't have in the van.

Personal taste I suppose

Yes your right I may just use it with everything switched off. I will look for one which has less power as the one I have at home is much too powerful.

If you don't ask you don't find these things out.

Ive also seen table top convection oven on a tv channel for

Lynn we used a combi in our camper when we had it as it only had 2 burners and no grill (our choice foreign van) and it was absolutely fine, never blew any fuses on the van or the site elec boxes and home and abroad

Think ours is a cookworks too Lynn would have to go out and check. I know there were 2 different sizes so just be careful where you are going to put it as they are quite large. Ours fits perfectly into a cupboard where the oven should have been and my OH put in an extra socket to power it. Hope you find what you are looking for.
