Complete novice in need of power advice

Just bought our first caravan, we powered it through an extension from the house just to check electrics etc... The lights are very dim and if you put one on the rest go dimmer! Is this because it's connected to the house, will it be better when running off a liesure battery or hooked up on site?
 
I am guessing you dont have a battery fitted yet. The mains is really only for charging the battery and some 240v appliances. You cannot drive many 12v appliances (pump lights etc) from the mains. You will notice a difference when you fit a leisure battery.
