Correct Tyre Pressures

Hi,

I purchased a new Abbey Aventura 330 (6 Berth)last year 2005.

Could anybody please advise me of the correct tyre pressures. The Abbey Caravans 05 owners handbook doesnt list it anywhere.

There is an Abbey Addendum inside but this only lists pressures for the 312, 316 and 319.

Is there ageneral rule of thumb???

Thanks in advance....

A possible reason why tyre pressures are missing is manufactures use different tyres on same weight vans. For instance, at a given weight, reinforced tyre runs at much lower pressure than a 6ply, slightly different again for an 8ply. There are other variables such as speed and weight rating indexes.

This could cause real confusion if just written in a book but as in this case the absence makes people enquire, hopefully this should avoid mistakes.

So questions need to be asked of exact tyre size and type fitted plus maximum weight of van to give an accurate answer.

I too have a Abbey and when I bought it new in 2004 I couldn't find what pressures the tyres were. I rang up the dealers and just to confirm, I also rang the CC Tech Support. Both figures were different although I gave them the tyre spec. of the ones fitted.

Hi Simon,

I too had the same problem , When i purchased my Baley, the pressure rating on the tyres fitted was 54psi, so i have kept them at that pressure.Never had any problem towing, a friend of mine owns a abbey when it was serviced last year the fitter advised a lower pressure to what he was using, soon after he experienced a blow out on the M25, whether this was the result of reduced tyre pressures not sure he has a very heavy van fitted with motorised stabilizers. I also increase the rear tyre pressures on my car to 45psi when towing, as per the cars logbook.

All Swift group vans have their tyre pressure on the plate near the door and in the Service book. Not the handbook

Please go and have a good look. I went through this last year with our dealer and he found the info from swift

Fantastic, thanks very much....its on the plate by the door!! Just as you said....65psi, sounds kind of high, but it's obviously correct.

Once again thanks.

Off to check my tyre pressure now.

Simon, the 65 psi suggests they are commercial tyres which run at higher pressures than ordinary car tyres. There have been many reports of this type of tyre failing and I believe that this has been attributed to the pressure.

The 65 psi is the pressure for carrying their maximum load. If your actual load is less than this I would suggest you lower the pressure. The maximum load will be shown on the tyre, double it, and compare it to the van max weight and then to the actual rate. The tyre manufacturer supplies a pressure versus load table for the particular tyre.

I am not a tyre expert and I am repeating what I have read in various reports including the CC. If in any doubt run them at the designated ppressure of 65psi.

Hi Ray, This has really got me thinking now!! The rate on the side of the tire says 1653lb for 2 tyres and 1705lb for one tyre. The Maximum permissable laden Mass of the vean is 1640KG (not pounds or lbs) The pressure on the tyre is 65psi.

Now if I double 1653 = 3306lb > by 2.2 (kilos) = 1502kg.......138kg less than my van!!!

The tyres are as fitted from new, but boy am I confused now!

I mailed Abbey but have heard nothing.

Can anybody help or am I getting my sums wrong?

Simon, check the load rating that is stamped on the tyre. It will consist of the load rating and speed rating e.g. 94N. The 94 is the load rating of the tyres on my van of 670kg per tyre, giving 1340kg maximum weight for two of them on a single axle which is the MPTLM of my van.

You can check yours on www.blackcircles.com/general/sidewall
