Cost of keeping private reg.number

In another post on here,ive stated that im changing my car tomorrow.
Im part exchanging it at a dealers but could someone give me some information regarding the transfer and cost involved in keeping the private registration on the car im part exchanging.
Will there be administration costs plus a transfer fee for me to pay even though the registration is mine?
Im a little confused but I imagine I should inform the dealer first thing in the morning of my intentions?
It isnt worth a great deal but my other half has now said that she wants to keep the registration number to transfer onto our newer car which im collecting tomorrow.

Is the dealer taxing the car for you or is it still taxed ?
If it requires taxing he will possibly have the forms required for the reg transfer ?

The tax expired on my current CRV yesterday,but to stay within the law for 2 days,I have taxed it for 6 months but will take it out of the car window tomorrow when I exchange vehicles,and then claim back 5 full moths tax on it at my local DVLA centre next week.(may sound strange but didnt want to invalidate the insurance in any way for the sake of 2 days.
The dealer is going to tax my "newer" Kia tomorrow prior to me collecting it,but as far as he knows for now,he will be taxing it with the original number attached to it.
(I think ive confused myself even more now....ha ha) but I hope you understand.

When I bought the truck the dealer changed my private plate over for me

I still had to pay the dvla fee.
I have two numbers on retention that I had on my motorbikes, I took them off when I sold them, but when I get offered a good price I will let them go ....

Either ask the dealer to do it for you, or make sure they know that the number is not part of the deal. The cost to transfer is £80. It's very easy to do. If you do it, you need the tax, V5's and MOT certificates (if applicable) for both vehicles, and a form that you can download from the DVLA website. You then send them off or take it to a local office. I took mine along to the local office and it was done within a few days.
If you can, get the dealer to do it as they'll be used to it, although I fear you might struggle now if you're supposed to be changing this week.

I think I will give the dealer a ring first thing in the morning and ask him if he will be able to do it on my behalf.

You can have the new car on its own number then DVLA will send you a replacement tax disc etc when the transfer goes through.

The dealer should know all about it.

Dealers have always changed mine over for me with just the standard £80 fee!! What I was annoyed about was the youngest peep has been promised the number plate when she has her own car, I wanted a new plate this year but no way am I paying £80 each year to retain the current one especially as it's probably 9 or 10 years away. I pay £25 per plate per year on retention, £80 fee first time + £25 per year

Send the following to your nearest DVLA local office:

• a completed V317 ‘application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number’
• the registration certificate for the vehicle or the new keeper supplement with a completed V62 ‘application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C'
• a test certificate for the vehicle - needed for cars and motorcycles over three years old, and heavy goods vehicles over one year old
• the fee to retain - £105 for one year, £130 for two years or £155 for three years

Renewing a retention document
About four weeks before the document runs out, a reminder letter is sent to the grantee to extend the right of retention for one, two or three years.
Complete the retention document and enclose the fee of £25 for one year, £50 for two years or £75 for three years. The fee is not refundable.
If the retention document has run out, the grantee must return the document and appropriate fee with a letter explaining why the application is late. The request will be considered.

Thanks for that Sproket but it'll still be an unecessary expense really but will keep it in the back of my mind
