helo, we will be hopefully traveling to france next year, after the dogs have had their injections and got their pet passports, so at least 6 months from now, so i went on the tunnel website to get an idea of prices, as we normally go by ferry, but are unwilling to leave the dogs in the car so its the tunnel next time. when i had priced it up it came to £348 for 2nd jan (sat) til 9th(sat), with 2 dogs. is this about right do i wait til nearer the time is their any deals to be had looking elswhere, we are members of both clubs, but we dont do tesco vouchers. thankyou for any advice, just thought id ask as first time on tunnel. thankyou again....ED

The earlier you book, the cheaper you'll get it. Leave it till the last few weeks and the price will be sky high. Between eight at night and 8 in the morning are the cheapest crossings. Also a Saturday will probably not be the cheapest time. For my crossings with car and van, the return price is usually around

Tunnel is expensive compared to ferry deals. We see many dogs travelling in cars on the ferry deck on longer Irish crossings and other long ferry routes. Some people transfer the dogs in to the caravan for doggy beds and food and water. I assume all ferry companies will let you do that.

The Dover crossings are less than two hours and we see plenty of happy pooches on our crossings.

We are planning to bring our granddaughter's little dog with us later in the year, what could be wrong in leaving the dog in the car or caravan.

euro, no problem leaving the dog in the car on the ferry providing it is a smooth crossing and the dog doesn't get seesick, otherwise the onward journey requires the windows to be open all the way.

thankyou chrisbee, no we are not restricted on times, but will be travelling from west yorks, i will have a look at alternative days, i dont fancy leaving them in the car, they are old english sheepdogs, so not small, and very boystrous, as they are still young, we actually think the younger one is from a different planet, and as you say if it is a rough crossing, which could happen as it will be winter when we go. thankyou to all for their comments, ED.

For the last 3 years we have covered all of our Tunnel crossings using Tesco clubcard vouchers. We opened a tesco credit card account and use this for all of our shopping, thereby acruing points, easily enough for 3xreturn trips per year. Bargain!

Would sooner pay more and get there in 35 mins and not 2 days as it took our friends to get to France in April due to the French Fishermans blockade. They lost two days of their holiday while we were sitting in Germany sunning ourselves and waiting for their arrival. The trouble is this sort of blockade is the norm and happens all the while at the Ports and you cannot tell if it will happen when you book.

i agree diane, but my first choice has always been the ferry coz its cheaper, and i suffer with claustrophobia, so going on the tunnel will be a big deal for me, but im doing it coz i dont want the dogs to be left in the car, and not know whats going on, aswell as possibly eating everything in the car. ive just had another look and got it to around 300 with the dogs included which are 30 each, so not too bad. it might not be the fisheries strikes on the tv it might be women comes out of tunnel screaming that gets the headlines. anyway, try anything once, regards ED.

Just a word of warning everyone, you will not get a refund from a tunnel booking if for some reason you need to cancel. We had to cancel last year and we were told no refund but you can transfer to another date within a12 month time scale from the date of the invoice. We had booked this in Nov 07 and had to cancel in Sept o8 so there was not a lot of time to fit another holiday in France The cost of the crossing was

hello simon, so whats it like inside the train, is there room to walk about, did you notice anyone with dogs in the car, because of my claustrophobia im usualy on top of the ferry all the way to calais, and the 5 mins i have to spend in the car deck im beyond any help, so my family just ignore me, its the best way, so is it more roomy on the tunnel, does it go quick, i know this sounds really sad but claustrophobia isnt nice. i once tried to get out of a plane via the window, buyt luckily the wonderful crew took me to the cockpit, and i was cured, because i could see all around and it was better, but once i went back to my seat it started again, but i just got on with it, hence no more flying for me. thanks again to any who reply, ED

You can walk about down either side of cars/caravans. You are in a "carriage" which is divided off from the others by electric shutters although you can walk through a door to get to toilet facilites. There are windows but you cant see much once you are in the tunnel. We sat in the car on the way and in the caravan having a snack on the way back, you are underground for about 25 mins. the height of the carriage makes it seem really spacious compared to say the London Underground. Anything else please ask.

To follow on from Simon, if you have your Caravan / Motorhome the carriage that you are in is very roomy with loads of space to move around, if familiarity helps your phobia there is nothing to stop you laying down in the caravan. I would say you are in the Tunnel for 20 minutes max, and even at 80mph it is immensely smooth.

I would definitely look at getting a Clubcard, even if it is just for fuel, if your house is powered by Eon (I think) you get points on that too,
