HI All

recently i have changed cars to pull my caravan , all was ok with old car ( a hippo ) no noises, or creaks when pulling or slowing.

Now i have a 99 honda crv , and everytime i start to slow whilst pulling my caravan ,the car kinda creaks from the rear quite loud.

i am using the same tow ball from my previous car, so i dont really suspect the tow ball, ( i have a alko set up )

the alko pads are clean, and the tow ball not dirty.

The one thing i can say is that even when i reverse in the crv , the creak noise still happens but intermittent.

does anyone know anything about this or had experince of this ?

any help highly appreciated

Hi Dave

I also tow with a 99 CRV and I don't get the noise you describe. However I do get a screech when manoeuvring at speed on a lock which is due, I'm told, to the rear diff lock trying to engage when it shouldn't. Know I am told this is not detrimental to the operation of the vehicle and although it can be fixed by Honda it won't hurt to leave it. Well to be honest it has been doing it for the three years and forty thousand miles I have owned the car so I live with it.

Anyway my point -could you be experiencing an advanced state of this common problem?

Unless you have a local independent Honda specialist it could mean an expensive trip to the dealers. The only downside of owning what is otherwise a super vehicle-the price of Honda parts and repairs

I don't think the CRV has a difflock. Doesn't it use a viscous coupling that detects slipping and then engages the other axle to make it 4x4. A difflock is a whole different thing and will equalise power to the wheels on the same axle, or equalise power between front and back with a centre difflock.

UPDATE*

on my way home this afternoon on the m61, i started to break from about 70 mph ( traffic in front ) down to about 40 , i also heard the noise then, kinda souded like the exhaust backbox was banging , but further inspecton proved wrong .

i was going in a straight line at the time , NOT TOWING ANYTHING .

i dont think its serious , its more of an anoyance when pulling the van .

thanks

dave
