Hiya

Which van do you have? we have a 2002 senator wyoming - any idea if it would fit?

The caravan was a 1991 Castleton which probably has a bit more curve in the front, to ease things, than the Bailey. But I feel the 110s spare wheel stuck out more relative to the centre of the tow ball than the Discos.

In your position I would do a simple check myself to better understand how much room I had. Cut a piece of small section wood [1.5"x 3/4" ]the length of your bike and duck tape it horizontally onto the spare wheel. Then if when playing things make contact no damage will result. Caravan hitched up put it on full lock travelling forward. Stop when the radius is developed and get out and see what clearances you have. From this you should be able to make a reasonable judgement of how much would be left when you add in the stand off of the bikes.

I feel with 3 bikes your pushing it, but two could be on.

I turned the handle bars inline with the wheel.

Lolly,

We for years carried two full size, as opposed to mountain bikes, on a Thule Raider rack that clamped to the spare wheel of our Defender 110's. This rack is discontinued so would be an Ebay jobbie, but it was a good bit of kit and was suitable for the old Disco.

With the turning circle of the Defender 110 and the front end design of our caravan it would not touch in any forward moving situation but could easily do so when reversing as that develops much tighter angles.

You could open the door with the bikes on but it was, shall we say not a nice experience. But otherwise it was a practical way to carry the bikes both towing and solo; just remember to unhitch and use the mover when you need to do any tight reversing.
To all you roof carriers.....

How do you get the bikes on the roof of a big car like a Disco without guarenteeing scratching or dinting the car ?

When I was looking for a solution for my Ford Galaxy, I found that I couldn't lift my wifes cheapo Halfords mountaing bike (copy), which incidentally weighs one half of a metric tonne, high enough.

I therefore bought and had fitted the extremely well engineered Pendle towbar carrier.

It remains to be seen if this is a suitable solution, but I will be trying it this Friday.

So - please all cross your fingers for me.......

Colin
