cycle carrier

I don't know about your'e x-trail. But there are lots with them.

We mount ours on roof of car that way the weight is distributed evenly works for us.

I like the Witter. It mounts to the right of the towball on the plate if you have the witter type to ball. There two versions one foe straight backs and one for tyres on the back type. Good strong and well made (not like CRAP TAPS for caravans).

I have had mine for years, Been through 3 cars. so it does'nt owe me a lot. I am sure they have a web site of you could try Indispention as I think they are stockists. as are most witter tow bar suppliers.

Hello Stephen,

If you use a tow ball mounted cycle carrier you must add the weight of the bikes and carrier to the nose load of the caravan to establish the tow ball load.

For many cars, the additional weight of the bikes cannot accomodated within the tow ball load capacity. Teh xtrail may have a significantly larger capacity, but you must not exced the manufactures limits.

A towbar-mounted bike carrier is really meant for use when solo, not when towing.

Don't forget that the weight of the carrier and the bikes, when added to the caravan noseweight, STILL has to be less than the noseweight limit of the car or towbar, whichever is the lower.

This may not give a problem on large 4x4s with 150kg noseweight limits but SUVs and cars need very careful consideration.

Thanks Norfolk Mike and everybody else.

I have seen the witter web side but found it hard to find price,

will lok in secondhand adverts inc ebay.

towball weight 100kg well within my towing limit.

Not ideal for me or wife to put on roof, thats why i am looking at bolting on to towbar bracket with extra lenght bolts.

Hello again Stephen

Even with 100Kg capacity on the tow ball, it will very easily be exceeded with both a caravan and a bike carrier. Consider if your caravan has a max nose load of 75Kg ( quite atypical figure) that only leaves 25Kg for bikes including carrier. Now unless you are using ultra light weight bikes, bikes and the weight of the carrier will probably exceed 25Kg and therefore you will be over loaded. Do take care to keep within your limits, because if you exceed them you are illegal, and insurance is void.
