Been to Chatsworth. I can really recommend it especially if you like walking. There is a gate in the wall around the campsite. You get a key to it. Go through and you are in the grounds of Chatsworth park. 15 minute walk to the right is Chatsworth house, 15 minutes the other way,Baslow village, all along a buggy friendly level path. Chatsworth house isn't national trust (in case you are a member) and not terribly cheap but the grounds and gardens are lovely. The site itself is what you would expect from the CC: clean, well laid out etc. We will go again.

Hi jo-anna,

Can advise you on Elveston Castle,If you are at all abit fussy then this site is not for you.

It sits along side the car park for the castle, infact the entrance is off the car park sharp left turn before the carpark attendants hut.

The toilet block needs alot to be desired, very scruffy indeed. You have to take a key this is to stop the daily trippers from the car park using it.

lots of very tall trees so tv reception is a hit and miss afair.

Site Warden explained that the the Derbyshire Council had taken over running the estate and wanted to build a hugh childrens play area within the grounds that the cc site occupied.

So it would appear the site days are numbered , okay for this year 2008..

The Eveston castle grounds are excellent for dog walks, Every cc site we visite we always buy the site disc, the warden had never seen any for this site enough said.

Been to Losehill. It is a bit small but very close to the village of Castleton, which you can walk into. There are some caverns - one called the Devil's Arse, which you can visit. To be honest bit like a tramp's mouth but worth a visit.

There are some interesting pubs and walks.

Chatsworth as Brian said is very good.

We have been a couple of times. It is quite good to walk the grounds at night when it is dark and see it all lit up. I found the house etc a lot better than NT properties in that you get a cup of tea in a proper cup presented by nice people, not in polystyrene by a student. Am I just becoming a sad old g**

Enjoy.

Hi Jo-anne,

We have done Blackwall, Grin Low and Elvaston. Our favorite is Blackwall Plantation due to being so close to Carsington water - good for walking but some sharp steep slopes if your biking though.

Grin Low is nice but we too were dissappointed with Elvaston Castle. Not surprised to hear its days are numbered it needed some serious investment when we were there a couple of years ago.

Not stayed on the Chatsworth site but the house a nd gardens are stunning.

Martin.

Hi Jo-anne

We've done Grin Low many times now. It's a lovely secluded site set in an old quarry. Usual excellent CC facilities. Right next door is Low Wood and walks galore . There's alovely shortish walk up to Solomons Temple, you can go inside and climb to the top of the tower. The views of Buxton and the surrounding countryside is fantastic.

Looked at Losehill last year but as it didn't have a good dog walk pased it by.

We're off to Grin Low later thi smonth.

Cheers

Alan

Not wanting to put a spanner in the works but have you tried booking for these sites - they are all booked up for the next season - at the weekends. It's a caravan club site and all their cumbria and nearly all the derbyshire sites have been booked in advance because you can book from January for the whole year - sucks really. Anyone else had the same problem? MC

Mandy,

I have just checked Blackwall Plantation and Grin Low and there are vacancies at both for most weekends .I checked mid May to October.

In "search and book" on C.C. web site you can bring up a calender for each month on each site showing which nights have vacancies.

your not on your own with noticing the club sites are allways fully booked, we use the burrs quite a bit and have to book at least 2 month in advance.

i have tried to book the site for this weekend but as expected it is showing full, however i know from past experiance that if i ring on friday they will allmost sertainly have pitches available as people will have rang to cancell.

I think its great to be able to book the sites online and not have to pay a deposit but a lot of people tend to abuse the system and book all year then cancell at the last minuite if they do not wish to go, i find these people selfish and its not in the least fair on those that cant get a booking, a much fairer system would be to leave it as it is but if you cancell more than say 3 bookings within 6 months then you lose the right to book anymore and have all your future bookings cancelled, unless of course you have a genuine reason other than you just cant be bothered going or your going some where else.

another thing ive noticed is the growing tendency of some retired members who now book wed to fri to avoid the busy weekend but by leaving saturday they are stoping the club from taking more lucrative weekend bookings.
