Just about to purchase our used tourer which comes with nothing apart from the spare wheel, dealers usually provide starter packs with their vans but I'm buying private. Can anyone give me an insight into the necessities I'll need before my first trip (water containers, batteries etc)?

Jeff, all the best with your new purchase, to keep it short you will need EHU (10m or 25m) if not supplied with van, a minimum of 85ah Battery, again if not already supplied with van, Fresh Water container and separate Waste Water container, plus a Gas Bottle (Red or Blue) and its relevant regulator.

Sometimes the private seller will leave the EHU as this should be part of the original contents, but will keep hold of the other mentioned goods, as they will/can be used on the next caravan, others will no doubt add to my list with things like crockery and cutlery etc but as I said I am trying to keep it short, as the first time you will want to relax and enjoy the experience and then decide what else you need/want, best regards Martin

Cheers H-L, I've made a note of what you've mentioned, a trip to the local accessory shop is in order.......with my hard earned by the look of it.

*Smoke alarm with batteries in it, (Wilko's are usually the cheapest)

*Fire blanket (look on www.firekills.gov.uk) - they have leaflets on there which you can download - fire safety in caravans.

*TV plus coax cable and remote control if you have one

*Ariel if you don't have a status etc (plus something to site it on)

*Cutlery - with a good selection of working knives

*Crockery

*Kettle (we have an electric one plus one you can boil water on the hob with)

*Sink drainer (optional)

*Lightweight cutting board (saves marking your work surface)

*Can opener

*Corkscrew

*Scissors

*Spare fuses

*Torch

*Pens

*Footpump (optional) we keep ours in the car

*Chemicals for the toilet

*Dust pan and brush (we have a 1300W hoover)

*Dishcloths

*Tea towels

*Kitchen cleaner

*Washing up liquid

*I also keep fabric cleaner in the van

*Bedding (but take out when you put it in storage)

*I always keep washing power/capsuals in the van too

*Towels, shampoo etc

*Wet wipes (very useful for when you have been messing around with the coupling etc and haven't filled your water container up yet and need to clean your hands)

*Foil and cling film

*Toilet tissue

*Hairdryer

*Make sure you have a suitable jack for your car tyres and caravan tyres

*A couple of screwdrivers and an adjustable spanner

*If you haven't got one of those portable bins, take bin bags or plastic carrier bags for your rubbish

*Chairs to sit on in the awning/outside

*Mallet and pegs for your awning

I think that's about it, good luck and let us know how you get on.

Well said Angus..... Do take proper glasses, plastic is ok for juices and the kids to use but beer and wine taste awful when drunk from plastic!

Just thought of another few bits:

We have a fridge but find there's still not enough room so have a 12V/240 fridge. At Lidl from 2 May they have them on offer for
