Detachable towbars

I have just purchased a Honda CRV with a detachable tow bar.At the moment I use a Bulldog 100 stabiliser that fits on a plate mounted on my tow ball bracket. Can I buy a bracket that will fit my detachable tow bar or will I have to buy a new Stabiliser.

It might be better to 'bite the bullet' and get a new stabiliser fitted to your caravan. Adding bits to the towbar may cause a problem and would almost certainly invalidate the warranty. Check with the manufacturer of the towbar tho' for any advice they can give you. It is probably a Brink towbar as they supply most manufacturers.

Fitting a stabiliser bracket on a "bolted ball" towbar is easy. It's more difficult on a "swan neck" to ensure the bracket remains at the correct angle.

It certainly WON'T invalidate the warranty of the car, towbar or stabiliser

However, I don't think it's possible to get brackets for "detachable" towbars - check with Bulldog - your only option may be to use a hitch-type stabiliser but even then you'll have to check that the detachable ball has the correct clearances.

You can be certain that detachable towbars have adequate clearance for integrated stabilisers like the AlKo or Winterhoff.

Adding a bracket for the Bulldog may, in some cases, prevent access to the lock of a detachable towbar, making it impossible to detach without removing the bracket first.

Adding the bracket for the bulldog to a swan neck is simple. Just 2 bolts and tighten it up once you have found the corect postion. Have always had detatchable bars and had the bracket on the last 2 vehicles which I fitted myself. saying that I have now changed to an Alko 3004, although I have to admit the buldog 200Q I felt was slightly better.
