Digital Radios

We caravan in the South of France and Spain and cannot always get the world service on our radio (we do not take a tv) or Radio Rivera, if we are in that area.

We were therefore wondering if a digital radio would be the answer. Has anyone any experience or comments on this.

We took our DAB radio to Northern France last year and could not pick up any stations at all.

If you take a freesat dish and reciever you will get most of the UK radio stations as well as TV and there would be hardly any difference in price to a DAB radio.

You need to bear in mind that digital radio is supplied by a transmitter and picked up by an aerial just like analogue radio/TV. Thus the further away from the transmitter you are the less chance you have of receiving anything. Where we live, in a natural dip, we can't get digital radio. The same will apply on UK sites in hollows, shielded by trees, hills etc No chance of DAB overseas.

Freesat should work anywhere - within certain limitations

We have always taken our Sony SWF 7600 SW radio with us - and never had a problem with reception - other than the usual issues of retuning / band switching for different times of the day.

Have you got a reasonable frequency guide? or downloaded the broadcast schedules from BBC World service?

If your radio is "insensitive" you might like to consider a SW long wire - Sony (and others) sell these as accessories - or a cheap DIY version 10 metres of thin insulated wire and a crocodile clip (clip onto radio aerial) will do the same job.

As others have intimated, DAB (just life FM radio and terrestrial TV) is a short range service.
