What a b*****d - off to Devon on Friday and the gearbox has gone on the car. Wife not amused at all. Second gear knackered. Have been quoted over £1000 for supply and fix of new box. Gone are the days of "Sod's Law" it is from this day on to be known as "Col's Law".

My Passat has been sluggish for sometime now, I first noticed it last October when (forgive the pun) towing to Towyn.

When we went to Dornafield in November it got up Telegraph Hill, south of Exeter at 30mph. March we went to Crossways, Dorset and just the same, it got that I was praying that there were two lanes up the hills. Anyway I got my mate to have a look at it and he took it to some garage to have it tested. They fitted a "air mass meter box". It cost

Oh no Colin, that's terrible - I wouldn't be amused either!!

Hope you can manage to get it sorted soon - for both your sakes! Will you be able to go a day or two later, if the car gets done?

Colin, what a bummer! Have you tried local breakers for a s/h gearbox? Is this on your Daihatsu, or have I got it wrong again? If it is the Dai, try Vale 4x4 in Cowbridge.Mainly Land Rover, but they appear to tackle anything. Good luck.

This was our third failed attempt to go away this year - one month ago my mother in law passed away, fortnight ago I was advised by the doctor not to drive for 72 hours and now this weekend the car canks out on us.

Emmerson thanks for your contact. I have been in touch with Vale 4x4 and all will be fixed by next Friday (week tomorrow) with reconditioned gearbox and new clutch. They have been very helpful and friendly.

Colin,

I can sympathise......A few years ago our gear box packed up on the Jeep when we were going down the M6 to start our holidays.

We were taken to the Club site at Chester and then tried to get a Jeep dealer to help us.What a joke......first thing they asked us .....Is it under warranty? Needless to say it was JUST out of warranty.So....no one was interested in doing the job without us waiting for at least 2 weeks.Eventually found a local garage and they sent the gearbox away to a specialist who reckoned that the fault had been there from date of manufacture.Did Jeep want to know.....not on your nelly.Cost
