Discounts on new caravans.

Hi Members

I am looking to make a return to caravanning this year after a break of about 7 years. I will be buying a new van, quite likely a Swift Challenger or Bailey Pageant. My question is, how much discount am I likely to get considering I have no trade in and possibly cash in full? I do not want a dealer display model, as I do not consider them as new vans. If the credit crunch has made caravanning the "in thing" and dealers are moving stock off of their forecourts easily, am I expecting too much?

I asked a similar question to a dealer recently when enquiring about upgrading my Bailey Ranger to a Pageant. He reckons that Bailey keep their prices low all the time where as other manuracturers will be priced higher but then they'll knock a load of money off and throw in free everything. He did say he may be able to do some savings on a Bailey but very little.

Good Luck, Dan.

Well if the general talk about caravanning is to believed dealers are very busy so if that is the case don't hold out your hopes for a big discount because you assume the industry is in recession! What a lot of dealer will do for customers without a part exchange is to offer a started kit which is often worthwhile.

It can depend on how well you know and use your dealer.

I use mine exclusively for all my carvanning needs including servicing and gas so get reasonable discounts compared to people never to be seen again.

There will be big discounts around on 2009 models when the 2010 models 'hit' the dealers in September.

You may have got a few quid knocked off but when you come to trade in you van will still be worth less than a 2009 even though you purchased in 2009.Sometimes model year changes are big new furniture, grp etc so a year earlier model is not as sort after.

How do you know if the van you are getting is new or not??? We went back to the dealer where we bought our last caravan recently with a view to ugrading to a new and different model. We were told they had two of that model in stock for us to have a look at. They were both demonstrators, one of which had been on show at the NEC. We asked what discount they were giving, and to our surprise he said 'Nothing! I don't need to discount them, I can get the full asking price for them anyway! I clean them up and no one is any the wiser and they pass for factory fresh!. If I am paying top whack for a new caravan then I would want one to be brand new and straight from the factory. One that hasn't been sat on, bounced on, messed with etc. Needless to say that particular dealer has gone down in our estimation. We walked away and would never go back there again!

Recently went to a family run dealership in North Lincolnshire and after looking around (as you do) I went to the office for a part ex price.

After the salesman pretended to give me the very best price he told me, the price on the van is ONLY for NO part exchange.....

Needless to say I bought a van elsewhere.

in normal years gone by you would expect there to be lots of bargains to be had the closer you get to september and the new model year. this year will not be the case. already dealers have sold a lot of their allocation of stock and certainly due to ALL the manufacturers cutting back production this year, there just simply isnt the excess of stock. the ecconomic climate has made more new customers try caravans this year, certainly more than after 911, which again was a good year for trade. even one uk manufacturer is stopping production of one of their brands completely after september, as did swift earlier in the year with abbbey, ace and bessacarr.
