For use when solo running we sometimes use a Thule Hang on, three bike carrier.

It is very good and secure but needs to be used with a lighting board/numberplate.

When towing we use a home made internal carrier that utilises front fork clips, for two bikes. This fits either in the back of the Disco forward and aft [looses the outside middle seat and one far rear seat so retains 5 seats of the 7] or it can fit in the van itself.

Hi Peter,

Take a look at pendle-bike.co.uk.

We got a rear mounted rack from them for our Disco 2. The rack arms were offset to clear the spare wheel.

Since fitted to our Disco 3 and it works fine, but with 4 bikes on, it does restrict turning circle.

Thinking of contacting them to get a new set of arms without the offset.

The mounting plate is sandwiched between the tow ball and the Disco tow bar plate, so no good if you have the removable style tow ball mounting.

We also use Thule roof bars with two Thule bike carriers mounted to the Thule bars. They also work fine, but even with the Disco suspension lowered it's a challenge lifting the adult sized mountan bikes up there! Advantage of this though is that you can still open the rear door, which you can't with the Pendle rack.

With our Thule Hang On you can still open both the top and lower tailgates of the Disco3 whilst it has the bikes on. Its hinged to allow this and rest the weight of the bikes on the ground. I have to admit is not a "doddle" but quite possible. The hinge is below the lowered tailgate so its safe to do without any risk of contact.
