Does anyone use a 3D printer?

My dentist used 3D printing for crowns. Had one over 12 months ago and no problems. Another booked in for mid July. Only a single 1.5 hour slot, but you can go for a walk whilst it’s being “printed”.
I had the same about 6 months ago. It was even colour matched to my existing teeth. You really can't tell which one is the fake tooth.

I almost bought a 3D printer before lockdown 1.0 but then lockdown hit and prices sky rocketed. On reflection I'm glad I didn't get one, there is enough waste plastic in the world already

I'd like one but can't really justify the expense for how much I'd use it. Gozza Junior has access to one through his university course, he's doing an engineering related subject and they use it for making prototypes. I've got a couple of ideas for things I'd like him to make for me for our new-to-us caravan (see below) but work hasn't started yet!

I'd like to get one because I'm a nerd who likes to know about these things. Not only that, often a small plastic piece on a product breaks and you can't buy just that spare bit and instead have to buy the whole item. So the thought of being able to make my own is appealing.

However, my pocket money only goes so far and other interests get in the way.

Some youngsters (under 30) will often do small jobs with their 3D printers. At Bath University there was a group that did such work. It helped their finances and also extended their experience in using 3D printers. Perhaps something like that operates out of one of the Scottish universities or colleges, or schools.

At work, part of my department was engineering. We purchased a printer, at a very large cost. Very slow and cumbersome to use. This would have been about 2008. It was also let down by the software but they found it useful in CNC training.

At one time my granddaughter husband bought a few with the hope of starting a small business. But it never came to anything. But the software is far improved on what is was as is the versatility.

I will have to ask him if he still has any.
