Hi - we are planning to take our 10 month Border Terrier to the Cote D'Azur in August and am now starting to wonder whether it will be too hot for him.

Any views or advice on taking dogs to this part of France would be welcome -- particulalry on how to keep him cool in the day

Hi Andy,
Just returned from France and Germany and encountered some pretty hot weather, we certainly found that the hound was not prepared to cover anything like his normal distances.
The plus side was that I had a good excuse to stop at a good few pavement bars for a beer.
On the way back we mentioned to the French vet that we were heading to the south of France in September and she recommended that we also use an "Excalibur " collar in addition to spoton etc.
Regards.

Hi! The collar you need to prevent leishmaniasis from sandflies is called Scalibor, and it's cheaper on the internet than from the vet's. Not sure about using flea/tick treatments at the same time tho. You could be giving the dog too much medication. Our vet wasn't happy about it, because you also have to get the dog treated for ticks and tapeworms the day before you travel back to the UK in order to satisfy the Pet Passport thingie.

Sorry I should have proofed my post - yes "Scalibor"
Just shows the differences of opinions between those in the same profession, our vet recommended the scalibor collar in addition to flea/tick treatment ?

Our vet told us that Frontline and Scalibor were okay together and in 3 years our dogs don't seem to have had any ill effects. We tend to take the collars off when we Frontline them annd replace within 3 days. However in SoF we just relied on the Scalibor as the effects of fleas are less serious than Sand Fly. Our vet also recommended the use of heartworm tablets when south of the Dordogne. They are cheap and given at 4 weekly intervals.
Just returned from 4 weeks in France and both dogs were zapped in the heat when it went above 35 deg C and just lay under the van, and they were taken out for excercise early (0600) and late (2200+), but it was so hot that all we did was sit under the trees in the shade.
