Dog smells in carpet

Having bought a second hand van, we have a problem with dog smells in the carpets - have shampooed to no avail, smell still fairly strong. Any ideas for further defumigating, or would it be preferable to order a new set of carpets?

On that subject, anyone have an idea of how much a full set of carpets would be for an Abbey Spectrum 545 before I contact a dealer with that inquiry?

Regards

Debbie

Don't go to a 'dealer' - or at least not a caravan dealer. Measure up your van yourself, draw a plan, and then go to your local discount carpet warehouse. If you're lucky you'll find a remnant in the correct colour, which can be cut to fit (they'll often do it there and then) and then you can have the edges 'whipped' making the carpet removeable. I've just had a 'spare' carpet made for our van - the carpet piece cost

Is it fixed or loose carpets?

If it's loose all you would need to do is, choose new carpet from one of the retailers, use your old carpet as templates and have the edges whipped! Lots cheaper than ordering new carpets from the dealer!

I wouldn't bother trying to get rid of the bad odours. If it's a fixed carpet or removable, do as the others above suggest.

When we bought our first van, it had a horrible chocolate brown carpet. I went out and bought a remnant and my husband fitted it (he stuck it down with heavy duty carpet glue). I have to say, it looked really lovely.

Thanks to all who have replied - looks like the carpet remnant idea the way to go - will investigate further locally

Thanks again

So Wendy, are you speaking from experience of having carpets made like this? Cos I am in Norfolk, and although there are plenty of carpet depots to choose from, always handy to know of a result through someone else's experience

Lots of new vans don't have carpets nowdays, instead having a wood-effect cushion flooring and sometimes some removable mats. So this is the idea I went with when we bought our first 15 years old van late last year. It had a grubby smelly carpet in it which I ripped out.

I then bought some wood-effect cushion floor lino from Carpet Rite and put that in the caravan, trimmed the edges with beading stuck on with "No More Nails" glue and varnished the beading to match the wood colour of the caravan units.

We haven't (yet) bothered with any mats and the floor is so much easier to keep clean, especially as we use our van all year round and it's soft and warm on the feet.

I would go with Legsmaniac's response.

Cushion floor/lino is much easier to keep clean, particularly if you have children/dogs. The only thing is, if you put carpet pieces or mats on top of cusion floor, they might need to be of the non slip type.

Our 2006 van has this type of lino with three pieces of carpet that fit on top, first thing we did with the carpets was bag them and put them in the loft.

We do not find the floor cold (even last week) and find it very easy to keep clean, we have 2 kids and a dog but even if we were a lone couple I think we would do the same.

Although we have lift out carpeting in our 'van we decided to leave them in situ. We then went along to our local market and found 2 large bathroom mats (latex backed) with a long pile. These sit well between the two front seats and into the kitchen area. They are idea and can be thrown into the washing machine when soiled.

Hi Debbie

I too bought a caravan with removable carpets that had a strong smell of dog, when we viewed the van the carpets were not down. I had them professionally cleaned and used a large quantity of Febreez but all to no avail. In the end we bagged them up and shoved them up the loft. We have 3 children and 2 dogs (they are rarely allowed in the van, Dogs not children, although thats a thought!) so i have to say it is very convient having the wood effect flooring, very easy to clean and sweep. We were away at half term (-5 some nights) yet the van didnt feel cold, as for the old set i dont think the smell will ever come out so were only keeping them for the pattern and one day we will have another set made!
