Regarding dogs running wild off the lead; witnessed an incident at a cc site a couple of weeks ago. A man was walking his jack russell on the lead, towards the dog walk, with his 2 year old son. Suddenly out of nowhere bounded a large black mutt, 'off the lead' with no owner in sight. It started barking at the jack russell, and jumping up all over the little boy. The next thing I knew, the poor man had to pick up the Jack Russell under one arm, and the little boy under the other arm, as they were both terrified of this large black dog jumping about with no owner. It was a few minutes before the owner appeared, laughing, to rescue their dog. They didn't bring a lead with them to put on the dog, instead walked it back holding on to its collar. Now the poor little boy will be frightened of large dogs for the rest of his life, like my son, who had the same thing happen to him a few years ago!! How inconsiderate some people are, and the rules do clearly state 'put your dog on a lead!. I also have a dog, a little westie, (who incidentally doesn't ever bark whilst on site), and is ALWAYS on the lead, and always poos on the dog walk. But he is also bothered by 'leadless' dogs running up to him and bothering him too. What can you do about it? He also gets upset by other dogs barking incessantly, as do we.

Hi Carolyn

I'm so sorry to hear about the bad experience your son had.

I typed out a whole reply to your post but deleted it as it might cause some controversy.

If you want to know how to deal with an out of control dog off lead rushing up to you and your dog, please enrol in some dog training sessions. Try the Association of pet dog trainers. You'll gain confidence and so will your dog.

Hi we have a yorkie, and as some terriers do he dosnt like some other dogs. We always have him on his lead, but on quite a few occasions, other loose dogs have come over to bother him. The dog usually gets a sound shooing off, and a snap from my dog, if within range. I always then go to vent my annoyance at the owners, to be told "they are only being friendly." I always explain that my dog isnt, and if they want to risk a trip to the vets with their animal, to let it wander over at will, and I also let them know that they have been warned, and I will take no further responsability, as my dog is securly tied up. This usually stops them, and usually no further bother.

We just had a lovely weekend away at a C&CC club site but I could not help but notice the number of people who just dont care about rules or the wellbeing of others.

Info leaflet handed to us when we booked in clearly said "keep dogs on leads at all times" and there were numerous signs around site to the same effect. So how many owners did I see keep their dogs on a lead ...... 1.

This guy was walking his dog on a lead and guiding a small child on a bike (no more than 3 years old). Two rather large dogs came running towards him nearly knocking the guy and his kid over and then set upon his small dog. He was visible shaken by the experience and the kid was inconsolable. The idiot who clearly was not following the rules just said "oh they only want to play". Sorry but I don't think the poor guy and his upset child thought the same - neither did his dog which was now crouched into a tiny ball.

Appeal to dog Owners.

I try to avoid getting into the dog arguments as it usually finishes up a futile back and forth of 'what about kids, radios, adults etc etc. I am not a dog lover but accept that many people are and are responsible. We have had many distressing experiences of barking dogs at home as do many people and the last thing anybody wants is to come away for respite only to get the same. I therefore appeal to responsible dog owners, wake up to the problem, these morons are giving good owners a bad name and the problem is getting worse, it will only result in restriction or banning of dogs if it continues. A recent trip to Trewethett farm was a prime example, despite the CC making extra efforts with leaflets and signs dogs were still wandering around off lead.

that`s a very aggressive attitude, are you that way when people come over to talk to you?

I tried to make my dog as sociable to other dogs as I could, now if a dog comes near him he doesnt like he will go indoors or lay down so they cant sniff him

This may be like taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut, but some times it needs a big show to get something done or changed.

If you believe your holiday has been damaged by the inconsiderate action of others whilst on a site, where they have been in clear breach of site rules about the control of dogs and or children even the hours of low noise etc, then you must complain in writing firstly to the site warden AND to the site owners/operators.

If it is a club operated site then do like wise to the club.

In essence when you book to stay at a site, you have chosen the site on the basis of location, facilities, and the conditions of stay (site rules). They form part of your contract whether written or not, and if for any reason, the site fails to maintain its promises and rules, it is in breech of contract.

It is as much a contract as when you by a washing machine, or have a house extension built, and it is subject to the same general laws as set out in the Sale of Goods Act.

If you believe the disturbances have been severe enough then even get your solicitor to write to the site owner.

Report the site to Trading Standards for misrepresentation, and false advertising.

Why do parents allow their children to take the dog to the exercise area?

I have now lost count of the times children take the dog, they don't carry bags to clear up, they have no intension of picking up the mess, and most parents wouldn't want their children clearing up dog mess, so why do they allow them to take the dog to the exercise area when they KNOW full well the mess will be left there?

Please, please, can we ban ALL children from the dog exercise areas unless accompanied by an adult?

Also, with dogs running free off their leads, there is also the safety aspect with all the publicity against dogs - lets be honest, it is a designated area for dogs to run around, NOT children, they usually have their own play area where the dogs are not allowed, so lets be fair to both and allow them their own space!

Well said Julia. Sadly, this not only happens on campsites, but in our everday 'dog walking'. I no longer frequent areas such as parks or the tow path due to morons and their dogs. Owners of 'friendly' dogs off lead which gallop up to you and your dog, 'it's only playing, it's friendly' they say.

People WILL NOT accept the fact that some people (such as myself and you), do not want fido hassling us or our dogs, whatever the temperament of their dogs.

I have in the past taken a schooling whip out with me and have used it on a couple of occasions. However, as I say above, I no longer frequent dog populated areas as some people are

1. plain ignorant

2. stupid beyond belief

Oh, and as an example of what can happen with a 'friendly dog':

I was at Clumber Park (not the caravan site) with one of my dogs who was ten months old at the time.

A 'friendly' dog off lead got hold of my dog which resulted in my poor dog sustaining about eight bites. It took three burly men to get it off my dog.

That's what finally made me start taking a whip out with me. However, now that dog is a mature entire male and quite capable, no doubt, to fend for himself should a similar situation occur.

i just just knew that someone would blame the kids.

i like dogs, i like kids, i have my own kids but dont have dogs. I have enough trouble training my kids.

Over the years , and im 48 so have few under my belt i have noticed that more and more dog owners treat their dogs like children and let then run around at will (just like kids) , even playing with balls and frisbees close to my caravan, and yes , weeing up it as well ( not seen my kids do this yet but you never know).

Unlike kids though dogs have a very nast bite, they crap everywhere ( well , i suppose kids might )and cause a general health hazard and keep me awake at night.. oh hang on my kids do that as well.

A few weeks ago a large dog cam bounding up to my 3 1/2 year old who was visibly terrified, the owner of the dog said " its okay , hes a real softy and wont harm him" . I said ," i dont give a ****, get that dog away from my son or i will"

Why oh why do dog owners seem to think that we want these animals runnign around and up to us.... we dont.

Perhaps its time for Dog only sites, after all we have adult only sites.

we have 3 dogs sheltie, sheltie/collie cross and rottweiler. All well trained and obedient. We make a pen around awning and use stakes on leads (the rottie is on a motorbike security stake as she'll pull anything else out of the ground). Like most dogs they will bark if someone invades their territory but i usually point this out is in a friendly way to anyone crossing our pitch.

As already discussed in previous posts its not the dogs that are the problem its the untrained owners. They are usually the same people that have not trained their children in manners or respect.

There was a time when campers and caravanners had morals and followed an unwritten etiquette but it seems nowadays that has gone. I blame the supermarket low priced, low quality throw away tents and camping sets, so easy and cheap to get without 'learning' how to camp.

Don't get me wrong, camping should be fun, I have 3 kids 17,15 and 9 and they love to run around but they have been taught from an early age to use designated footpaths, to play ball games in play areas, to repect the rules but also to expect it from others as well. They all are in full control of the dogs and have picked up the dog pooh without being told from when they were old enough to wash their hands themselves.

I too get fed up of barking dogs and children bouncing balls off the toilet blocks, but stressing over it ruins your holiday, marching over and starting a row causes more friction and ruins everyones holiday. Lately I have found the best way to deal with it is to simply get out the camera and video the 'bad behaviour' be it kids misbehaving or dogs barking. The parent/owners have always known they were in the wrong, so as soon as they see you videoing they do something about it. If they don't you have something to show the warden, which is what they assume you are going to do. Most times you dont need to.

In the summer we tend to go to bigger sites but only ever family owned and run ones as they are more likely to enforce the rules. Out of the main summer season we only visit caravan only sites as there is then no danger of pitching next to one of those cheap supermarket tents.

This is as old as the hills,in 1976 our dog was attacked late at night on a cl field in Devon, our dog was tied to the hitch,a vet had to be called and operated on the van floor, luckily are dog survived. the dog which attacked was a border collie from a neighboring farm, dad thought it was the cls dog and wanted it put down, dad had the wrong dog and i knew it went right up to the dog after a fair bit of yelling from me to the owner saying it must of been one of her pups, dad backed down and the owner of the cl realized which dog it was.i had seen 2 collies on the cl and knew that it was not this *****.had seen a male dog run of.

lucky we had vet bill paid by the owner and it was reported to police.dad was a copper.

as for the noisy dogs use a muzzle,on it,or throw it meat with sedatives in it.peace.

Hi Wendy

Yes the wind break is from 'D & T' the one we have comes out from the van 15' & is 20' long plus the gates...

All the frame work, covers & fittings weigh approx 30kgs, ours is now loaded up in one of the roof boxes ready for Tuesday when we go down to the Cotswold's

I put it all together myself & then my wife holds the panels whilst i fasten them down ......

It took about two hours the first time to put it up, it cost a lot of money but we feel its worth it, sometimes we will just put the windbreak up and not bother with the awning ...

But to do that i bought another draught skirt for the side of the van to stop escapees...

Opps !

I bought ours direct from the D & T awnings webb site & it came next day, I forgot to say that i can shorten it back quite easily to 10' from the van if the pitch is on the small side, but everyone who has seen it up is impressed.....
