The fridge on my caravan is 5 years old and has just stopped working on mains electric, although power to the fridge is okay. I am not sure about 12v, but works with no problem on gas. Any sugestions as to what may be the trouble, and would it be a reasonable DIY repair. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hello Martin,

It might be worth checking all your fuses first, but if this does not resolve the problem, then it is likely that the 230V ac heating element has failed and will need replacing.

Most fridges need to be removed to gain access to the heating elements it must be removed and refitted by a gas competent person

I had a problem with the circuit board burning out and the 12v system not working whilst the rest did work. Check the board at some stage - tell tale sign was dark burn where 'something' had gone. Any luck the circuit board will be accessible from behind the control panel.

Hi Martin.

Sounds most likely to be the heating element. Access can normally be gained through the vent panels externally, with a bit of jiggery pokery and mild swearing! Lot cheaper than having to have it removed and reinstated by a gas fitter.

Is replacement a DIY job?

I have hit the same (identical) problem on my 5 year old Dometic RM4230 fridge but can access the rear of the fridge via the vent grills being removed.

Martin

my dometec fridge fitted to my bailey has failed twice since new in 2004, both times the problem was the 240v heating element. replacement is possile through the outside vents as already mentioned.

on refitting ensure the the element is secured correctly into the holder.

To check the element you can do a resistance check on both occasions mine failed o/c.
