Martin,

I had the same problem with my Fridge and the reason it didn't cool on 240v is because the Heating Element had packed up.

The burning smell when used on Gas is normal, but if the fridge has not been used by this method for a while, then the gas jets could be blocked by soot.

It is advisable to run the fridge on Gas for 24hrs each time you use the caravan and as you say it has never been used this way before, then I would strongly advise you to have the fridge looked out or serviced by a qualified caravan engineer,

best of luck with which course you choose to take, Martin

Hello Martin,

Sadly I have to advise you that as the fridge is a gas appliance it comes under the Gas regulations. The regulations require (In Law) that the 'installation, service, repair or removal' of the appliance which includes making or breaking gas couplings in the pipe work must be carried out by a competent person working to the regulations.

The fact that you had to ask for assistance in diagnosing the problem strongly suggests that you are not familiar with the appliance and therefore you must refer the repair to a competent fitter.

Several points have been raised by replies to the original question.

Firstly, and most importantly, as John L states, any work requiring the making or breaking of couplings is covered by regulation and can only be done by competent persons (competent means those tested and approved by recognised training bodies)

Secondly, apart from a short period of time when the appliance is new, there should be no smell from correctly fitted and adjusted gas appliances.

Thirdly, if jets are blocked by soot, there is something seriously wrong with the gas to air mixture and the appliance is producing dangerous combustion fume, and must be properly serviced as a matter of urgency.

Lastly, the jets employed in Electrolux and Dometic fridges are VERY sensitive (although they may not look it) and any tampering or attempted cleaning will render them unserviceable, even brushing a finger over them.
