Ministerial cars drove the equivalent of 114 times round the world last year - up by more than a fifth in just 12 months despite the battle against climate change.
Senior politicians, their officials and permanent secretaries notched up 4.6million km (2.8million miles), a rise from 3.9million km (2.4million miles) the year before.
A trip to the Moon is 386,000km each way and the Equator is around 40,000km.
The total CO2 emissions for the journeys were around 821 tonnes.
The Government Car and Despatch Agency last year hired 210 drivers at a cost of £7,305,000.
The figures were revealed in a written answer to the Liberal Democrats, who estimated that the total cost of ministerial cars this year would be £18million.
Their transport spokesman, Alistair Carmichael, said: 'Transport accounts for over a quarter of the UK's CO2. Ministers need to start leading by example.'
The Government has been vocal on the issue of climate change. In January, Environment Secretary David Miliband criticised Prince Charles for flying to New York to collect an award for promoting green issues.
He said: 'I think a lot of business can be done by telephone and video link these days.'
Last night, the Cabinet Office said the Government was spending £1billion over four years to go green, replacing 78,000 vehicles with more environmentally friendly versions.
It added: 'The programme aims to slash carbon emissions from the public sector fleet by 15 per cent by 2010. This is expected to save departments £100million'

Remember this when they try to stitch us up with road pricing.
And exactly how green is it to replace 78000 vehicles. Surely the effects of building /shipping them is greater than simply keeping what they have but using them less.
