Door locked when I closed it??

Whilst in the S of France last month I closed the caravan door from the outside. When I tried to open it again it was locked. Bit of a panick as both sets of keys were inside the van. Thought I would have to send SHMBO onto the roof to gain entry via the roof light which was the only window open. After a few tries I managed to force the door handle round and 'overcome' the lock. From then on we kept a key outside the caravan at all times. It has done it again maybe 4 or 5 times since. It is completely random and have spent a fair time trying to 'make' it happen to no avail. Has anyone else come accross this snag? Van is a 2009 Anvondale dart.

I have in the past done something similar. Upon leaving the caravan my back pocket snagged on the lock handle causing it to lock. Grateful that I had a spare set in the car as it is so easy to do.

It happened to me , we were on a cc site River Breamish (Northumberland) , both just back from having showers, asked the warden informed that the nearest caravan shop was in Newcastle , which was handy as the car keys were inside the van, Putting on a very brave face, visited about 6 fellow Bailey owners, various models, and ranges Pointing to which pitch I was one, explaining that the caravan had locked us out, and could I possibly borrow their door keys , to see whether they fitted our van,to enable us to gain access to our van,Luck was on our side the 6th set of keys tripped the lock. Every since then I have always carried a the door key everywhere I go.
What caused it to happen, not completly sure as it happened several times later, resulting in us having a brand new door lock fitted, We both now have two caravan keys one for the door, the original for all the other lockable lockers.
When the fitter replaced the lock, he said possible cause was wear, as we have to give the door a hefty push to close it.We still think the caravan was playing tricks on us as we had just bought it prior to the site visit.

Thank goodness it's not just me! I thought at first I had moved the handle but it has happened several times now - keep a key somewhere outside the van. May change the lock but can I keep the same key No? Shame to have another two keys just for the door.
Having got round the prob by 'forcing' the handle I'm glad I fitted an extra lock on the door frame as it illustrates just how insecure the door lock is.
Thanks

Our son managed to lock our caravan during a holiday in Brittany when he was about 5. Ever since that time we have a spare key concealed behind a removable external fixture on our caravans

We've also been locked out of our cars a few times by our dogs

and we always have a spare concealed on our cars since having to break an expensive window on a very hot day.
