We are off next week and still are unsure of the value of taking the bikes for two 60 plus oldies. The last time there was many years ago. Can anyone tell us, should we or not bother given the extra weight and hassle, will we use them enough to warrent taking them.

Well it is always difficult to say whether someone else will like or not like something. BUT I always take my bike to France every year because:-
The roads are much quieter.
There are often car free paths running from sites to attractions or the nearest village.
I also use it to pop to reception, or the toilets, or the fishing lake.

Wayne - which site are you staying it?
Like I've just answered in your other post - don;'t bother with bikes in my opinion.

Hi Wayne

We've just come back from Sarlat. took our bikes and didn't use them once. Won't take them next year - might take a canoe instead?
We stayed outside Sarlat and thought we might be able to bike in to town. It's too hilly just like Carwyn says. Would also agree with Carwyn about the road safety tips and he should know.

You'll love Sarlat. Get to the Saturday market early to fill your boots with local produce. Hope you like walnuts and fois gras

Got back yesterday (Beynac - Cazenac).
My 10p worth. I think the roads are a bit dangerous for bikes, and was too hot whilst we were there 40 degrees some days. If you are on a big site you may use them around the site, or maybe there are good bike tracks nearby. Personally I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to cycle on the roads around the dordogne.
We didnt even take the kid's bikes and they didn't miss them!

We are currently in the Dordogne. Normally we would have taken the bikes with us but because its only a few months since I had my hip replaced we thought better of it. We have been in France now for about 4 weeks and the only place it would have been possible to get a lot of use out of them was on the Ile d'Oleron. We are used to cycle ways and find some roads a bit intimidating!
