We've been invited to a wedding in the UK in June and have decided to combine the visit with a touring holiday. Our first port of call will be Essex where I have some personal matters to attend to. After the wedding in the West Midlands (Solihull) we plan to drive up to the Lake District and stay there a couple of days, then to move on to Edinburgh and on to the west coast (maybe the Shiel Bridge area?). We want to go back a different route, maybe taking in Braemar, Scottish Borders, York, Cambridge, etc. We have about 3´ weeks for the round trip. Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome.

I can't help you much Lutz because we use mainly C.C. sites which I don't suppose you're a member of.

We also are starting to use C.C. CLs more now but I'm sure people like Lady Mo will be able to help you with the Scottish sites.

For your Essex port of call I can recommend the CC & C site Kelvdon Hatch which is just outside Brentwood, close to the M25 and A12.

I can also recommend the CC site at Cherry Hinton, Cambridge.

Hope this is of some help.

Lutz,

We are Club members and always stop at Bunree when we are in the Fort William area.

We did go & visit the site at Loch Linnhe/Corpach.Couldn't fault the site....beautifully landscaped and excellent facilities BUT tourers were placed with no view of the loch at all.It seemed to cater more for residentials & seasonals.

www.linnhe-lochside-holidays.co.uk

We have also visited but not stayed at Invercoe caravans

www.invercoe.co.uk

This is in a beautiful situation looking right down Loch Leven and backed by the Glencoe mountains.Small hard-standing pitches big enough for a caravan only.....toilet facilities good.

From Onich you can also get the ferry over to Ardnamurchan etc.Mostly single track roads but very quiet over there.

A camp-site

www.resipole.co.uk is over there which faces on to Loch Sunart.A very nice site with good toilet facilities. We haven't used it,but did visit.

Braemar Club site is in a very scenic area

and is up to the usual club standards.

Edinburgh Club site has 24hr.security.it is surrounded by a rather rough area, but the site itself is OK.

In the borders we often use the Club Site at Melrose. This is one of the few sites when you step outside you are 2 mins.walk from the town. Here there is a good mix of shops, and public transport to the neighbouring towns.Melrose Abbey is worth a visit....Robert the Bruce supposedly has his heart buried there.

If there is anything else I can help you with feel free to ask.

I don't know if it would be too far off your itenary Lutz but my favourite site in Scotland has to be Carradale Bay C.C. site on the Mull of Kintyre peninsula. The drive is scenic though, mostly skirting the lochs and sea.

It's not regimented, and the pitches are on grass which is kept cropped by the semi-tame rabbits. I must admit that my choice could be biased by the 9 days of wall to wall sunshine we had and there were Rhododendrons everywhere.

The beach is about one mile long and sandy, also sheltered. The seawater was tepid when we were there last June.

We also spent a pleasant day on Arran, catching the ferry from Cloanaig.

North Ledaig is a nice place to stop, although the pitches are regimented. We went to Mull for the day from Oban while there and that was nice driving around the island, also having a meal at Tobermory.

To add to Lady Mo's post about Onich, the beach is made up of big stones and if you want a lochside pitch you cannot erect an awning.

Two other sites I rate highly in Scotland are the C.C. site at Dachalm, Brora and the C.&C.C. site at Rosemarkie, near Inverness. Both sites have long sandy beaches with hardly anyone on them. To reach the beach at Brora theres a gate by the pic link I gave below which takes you 2 minutes walk onto the beach. Brora has some quite scenic drives around Loch Brora and Glen Loth. We drove up to John O Groats from Brora but it wasn't worth the bother :O(

A big plus at Brora and Rosemarkie is the absence of Caledonius Midgium.

My favourite site that I've visited in the lakes is Low Manesty. People are put off by the single track double humped bridge at Grange but it's no problem. From Grange, once over the bridge, the road is narrow but it's not far from the site then. Turning right out of the site to go to Keswick there are some lovely views. You can walk directly from the site down to Derwent Water and into Keswick. The downside is theres no shower block if you must have one.

See the following links Lutz, hope it's of some help....

Thanks to everyone for the trouble they've taken to put the information together. Just one further question: Does anyone have any experience of the Morvich CC Site at Inverinate? It also seems to be a good focal point from which one can tour the Highlands.

Lutz,

Morvich Club site is a very pleasant place to stay.Surrounded by high mountains I felt slightly claustrophobic on arrival. The Isle of Skye is within easy reach and the bridge is now toll free.Plockton is also a lovely spot to visit. You can also pass one of the most photographed Scottish castles

www.eileandonancastle.com

This is right beside the main road in a very commanding position

The drive from Fort William to Morvich on a good day is breathtaking.

My only worry is that you are not going to have enough time to complete your journey!!!

Lutz if you turn right when you go into morvich and follow the the road round its a single row beside the river very private. if you turn left its a more open area with more vans.

Lutz, the Morvich site at Shiel Bridge is wonderful and set in magnificent scenery. If you turn right after Reception as suggested by Colin A, you will be sharing the pitch with lots of midges! The more open area is preferable, in my opinion, as there tends to be more of a breeze.

Lutz,

Have a look at C.C.Club Braithwaite Fold at Bowness, Windermere - Google satellite will give you a good idea of the site. The pitches are on the small side but the site is pretty central to the Lake District with lake cruises close by. Handy if you are only going to be in the area for a short stay. If you do opt for that site book early !
