Draining and Filling Water System

Can someone assist with the following?

With the recent frosty weather I have opened and drained down both the hot and cold water pipes next to the Truma heater tank. The taps have been left in the open position.

I am due to go out again in the caravan at the end of the month and am wondering if there are any 'tricks of the trade' and specific things not to do when filling the system.

Do I just shut the tapes, fill the Aquaroll, turn on the pump and sit back? I assume the hot water tank fills from the Aquaroll and the water tank heater should not be turned on until one is sure that the tank is full and the element will not burn out. How is this achieved? How are 'air locks' avoided?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Bernard,

I always fill the aquaroll, attach water pump, turn pump on then open the hot/cold tap in the kitchen to purge the system of air while the system is filling up (until the water flows without splutering) then open the taps in your washroom including the shower until all the air is out of the system. You should not get any air locks if you open the taps.

Hope this helps

Hi Bernard

1/ Close all taps including the tap next to the water tank.

2/ Fill aqua roll and connect to inlet.

3/ Put wastemaster in position.

4/ Switch on pump on the control panel.

5/ Open one tap at a time in the central position (mix of hot and cold), only open about half way or you'll get an unwanted shower, leave it open until you have a constant smooth flow of water wherever the tap is positioned (except closed of course)

6/ Repeat for all taps in van (kitchen, bathroom, shower etc...)

7/ When complete switch on water heater and possibly top up aqua roll if you want.

8/ Fill kettle and make a cuppa.

n.b. You'll find it takes a little while until the water flows smoothly but doing it as above should prevent air locks.

Also I think the heating element in the heater cuts out if there is no water in the tank, I stand to be corrected.

Hope this helps

Mike

I have left water heater switch on a couple of times and it has always reset itself with no problems, have also forgottento flip down the drain off and emptied the aquaroll on the ground under van.

With the Ultrastore, it is always worth making sure you do not have the element switched on with no water in the tank.

Whilst the overheat cutout may save you, if that fails, or simply repeated operation with no water, the element will burn out prematurely and they are not cheap to replace.

I left my main switch on by mistake and the element eventually failed as the caravan was connected to a timed power socket for one hour each night just to keep the battery topped. i assume that eventually the fail safe failed after switching on and off for a couple of weeks before I realised. A silly but easy mistake to make.
