We have been caravanning for a number of years and have never drunk the water directly from the aquaroll. We do steralise the system several times each year. Does anyone ever drink the water from the taps. Jane.

i do the same as Kevin ,any body who keeps Koi in an outside ponds knows that you cant drain your pond completely and refill with freshwater , because fresh tap water contains bleaches and other additives which kill bacteria , so i go on the assumption that most of the bacteria in my aquaroll will be killed off ,

Have been vanning 33 years, and we (including when the kids were small,) and now with a 5 year old grandaughter accompanying us , have always drunk our tap water.Mind you I wouldn't use an aqua roll though, have always preferred to be able to see my water, for level & colour.

Always drunk from the van taps as have my young kids. Never had any problems at all. The only caveat is that when the van's not been used for a few months I always run water through the taps first to get rid of any stagnent thats been left in the pipes. I do the same why my aqua roll mains hose as well.

We always drink water direct from either the aquaroll or inboard tank. We clean all the tanks and pipes before each trip with a Milton Solution. We just make sure the supply we are using is reputable. We and the dogs are still here! after many years.

I know this is a very old thread, but some of you oldies will know my feelings about drinking from Aquarolls (it's a long story).
We've just sold a caravan, and because I'm fussy about the aquaroll/pump/pipes cleanliness decided that we should sterilise the water supply before handing it on to the new owners. At the same time we decided to buy a new pump for the new caravan we've bought. We discovered at the caravan dealers that you could buy replacement pump pipes for just over a fiver, so I asked my OH to buy a set to replace the pipes on the caravan we were handing over as the couple buying it have a young baby and I wanted everything to be really clean.
We have sterilised the water supply in our van regularly, and maintained the cleanliness of the acquaroll, so you can imagine my horror when OH took off the old pipes, and I cut them open to see what was inside.
Here is one of the photographs I took - and this is why WE NEVER DRINK FROM THE AQUAROLL.

Anyone got a microscope and would like to analyse this foul gunk?

That would be in all the water pipe work inside the caravan. We learnt a long time ago never to drink water from the caravan system. Besides using it in tea makes the tea taste funny!

I've only been caravaning for around 4 maybe 5 years but in all that time I always use the water from aquaroll for everything from drinking to tea/coffee and squash for the kids, none of us have ever suffered any ill effects so as the saying gos what the eye can't see and I can't see inside the pipes, I sterilise it twice a year replacing the filter ech time and I'm happy with it so far, each o their own though eh.

We have a water softener on our domestic supply with just one direct connection from the mains to a tap in the kitchen. This is used for drinking and cooking water only. When I replaced that tap its polymer pipe work in the supply line had similar gunk to that in Vals picture. Must assume that the gunk is not hazardous as none of us have had poorly tums at home or when in the van.

Guess most of the replies refer to UK water supplies only.

if you are travelling in europe suggest a good filter (e.g. Filtapac) in the incoming supply and then take care especcialy in the hotter climates. The cost of bottled water in 6 or 8 litre containers from supermarkets is so low that the risk is really not worth taking.

One reply referred to softened water. This is not the same as filtered water and most softeners rely on ion excchange devices regenertated with salt and with some carry over, so the resulatant water is NOT recommended for drinking especially for those with heart conditions. Domestically, water softeners shold always be fitted ater the incoming first tap (usually in the kintchen) and only water from this tap should be used for drinking.. I have never seen a water softhener (as oppesed to a filter) fitted in a touring caravan.

If in doubt sterilse the water with a shot of good sterilant in the form of pastis or Scotch.

Agree your comments on domestic softener but as I said in my post our drinking/ cooking water does come straight off of the mains supply to the house so it doesn't have any contact at all with the softened water, and I found gunk in the pipe work of that supply. I now have a very expensive filter in that one too.

We drink straight from the aquaroll/caravan tap except for one weekend a year, when we go with a group that stays on a farmer's field not normally used as a camp site and the water comes from a very dodgy tap! When we stay there I use the aquaroll for all washing etc, and for drinking water that's going to be boiled (e.g. tea & coffee) and buy bottled water for normal drinking!
If we're drinking from the aquaroll I use a product called Aquasol (one bottle cap full to one full aquaroll, which is less than the manufacturer's recommendation) and it keeps everything hunky dory - in fact the family have commented that the water tastes funny on the odd occasion I've forgotten to add the Aquasol!

In all the years we've been caravanning, we have NEVER used the water from the aquaroll for drinking, we don't even use it in the kettle for making tea. Instead, we fill one of those clear jugs (for making summer drinks) at the site tap and use it in the kettle for making hot drinks and to wash vegetables & salad stuff. For drinking we use bottled water. The water from the aquaroll is only used for the shower, bathroom sink and for washing up. We sterilise the aquaroll with Milton and run the solution through the pipes on a regular basis.

.......for some reason whatever precautions you take, the plastic flexible piping used in submersible pumps gets this black coating inside.
I have found that it never occurs in any other parts of the caravan water pipework which are normally translucent.
I always use the water straight from the tap in my caravan regardless of this and can taste the variations of taste in water from the next county .........never mind another country.
Having said this I do not trust the Spanish water supply so use bottled water there.

I sometimes stay on a caravan site on a farm and the water supply comes from a hole in the ground (a well) and is thus untreated.
The owner has to tell prospective customers this fact and he tells me some are put off from coming.
