I read this morning that British motorists are set to see new driving licence changes introduced within a matter of days, which would give them better access to operate certain vehicles.

From June 10, 2025, changes will be introduced impacting driving licence entitlements for certain zero emission vehicles.

Britons with a category B licence will be able to drive an electric or hydrogen car with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 4,250kg.

The category B licence applies to motorists who have passed their practical driving test, although their permissions will depend on when they passed their test.

Currently the limit is 3500kg

Perhaps the batteries are getting heavier🤪🙀

I would not worry about it, after all how are they going to police it. More chance of finding rocking horse 💩 than a police man 👮‍♂️. If you did get captured, you will get a slap on the wrist, all down to the snowflake society we are living in.

Proposed EU driving licence changes
.
...the UK mostly follows EU legislation for driving licences.

The change proposed for the EU provides for the entitlement of a Category B licence to be increased across the board from 3500kg to 4250kg subject to having held a valid existing Category B licence for at least 2 years, not just zero emissions vehicles. The zero emissions restriction is a peculiarity of the UK.

This is a smart and overdue move. From June 10, 2025, UK drivers with a standard Category B licence can operate zero-emission vehicles (electric or hydrogen) up to 4,250kg MAM, up from the current 3,500kg.

It’s all about compensating for the extra weight of batteries — a key issue for electric vans. This change makes it easier for fleets to adopt greener vehicles without needing a C1 licence, which cuts down on training and admin costs.
