Bonjour porfavor.

July will see our first trip to France. We arrive in Dunkirk Saturday evening 7ish and are booked in to a site in Saumur on from Sunday. We will be travelling with our 3 year old.

We will need to either overnight near Dunkerque and do the full journey the next day or I am more inclined to just head down there a make as much progress as possible.

How long does this journey take and is it possible recomendable to pull in to service stations on the way and overnight or can anyone recomend a good site for an overnight which is en route (thats French)

Grazias, Mat

Hi Matt

You don't say which month you are going, but Saumur is 360 miles.

If you go to www.eurocamping.co.uk you will find plenty of campsites you can stop to pull in for an over night stop. If its your first time 360 miles is a lot to do, especially with a 3 year old.

I would drive a bit, stopover then finish your journey with comfort breaks en route....

Thanks Smiley but struggling with that web site though.

Its July we're going. Are service stations a no no then? Its just I'm a little apprehensive about booking somewhere half way there if we don't make it and reluctant to arrive at sites on spec potentially late at night.

thanks

Mat

Hi Mat,

I live just outside Saumur. The best thing to do in my opinion is to overnight in the Aire des Deux Caps, just outside Calais. It's quite safe. They have a part set aside especially for caravaners. Get a decent night's kip and set off the next morning. A steady tow from Calais to Saumur should take no more than 6 or 7 hours including breaks. Direction Abbeville - Rouen - Alencon. Take the A28 at Alencon for Le Mans. At Le Mans take signs for A85 and Saumur. get off the A85 just outside Saumur. It's really simple and the A28 gets you here really quickly. It's not that expensive either. Hope that helps.

The Aire des Deux Caps has 'hook-up' available on meters, and showers in the restaurant building, for which you pay only a small fee. It will be full of caravanners, so arrive reasonably early to get a good 'pitch'!!! If I remember the restaurant serves meals until quite late - and is reasonably priced - breakfasts are good too. All in all, a great place to stay - but wouldn't recommend two weeks there!
