Hello

This is my first posting on this forum..My OH and I have just bought a new caravan (2 berth Abbey 215 GTS); we are planning to use it a lot this next few months when we return to the UK from France. We have been looking into comprehensive insurance but seem to find quite a large variation in prices that doesnt necessarily reflect the type of cover....any reccomendations or suggestions please gratefully received.

Hello Carolyn

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on buying your caravan.

There have been many questions re. caravan insurance and a look through forum search in the blue box on the forum header should unearth a good amount of information.

The level of cover for your caravan is key, it's not what they say now but what happens in the event of loss or accident that counts.

A good starting point is the two main clubs, Caravan Club and Camping and Caravan Club. Both of these are totally reputable for caravan insurance and in the event of problems will minimise stress and bother. They may not be the cheapest policies out there but they do what they promise.

My own experience is with the C&CC Club Care insurance. Last March we bought a new Abbey 495 and in July we went out for the day while staying in it. It was pitched at a riverside camping site and when we tried to return the police wouldn't let us through so we had to go home.

The river burst its banks in the early hours of the next morning resulting in a flooded caravan.

Within a week the insurance assessor had inspected the caravan and declared it a total loss.

We were covered for a replacement caravan and the club insurance were so efficient and pleasant to deal with and were actually waiting for us to choose a new caravan (Abbey 620)

We delayed a while to wait for the 2008 model and after doing the deal they paid out within two days. The service was first class and we insure our replacement caravan with C&CC.

Hope this helps.

A number of caravanners use the Caravan Club insurance even if the membership fee is added to the premium because no other sevices are used.

Many other insurers have more restricted policies - price isn't everything.

Contents insurance is optional - we don't take that, getting better value from
