I am considering buying an item on e bay but it is from Hong Kong, the price is low so if it dose not arrive I will not be to upset.
Is it worth the risk or is there no problem ?

There is always a risk with anything bought through EBay, but all you can go on is the rating given by EBay for the seller.

You can't even go by the ratings. You can/could actually buy ratings for e-Bay unless they've now stopped the scam.
Personally I wouldn't buy anything from Hong Kong but you never know, you might be ok.

Hi Pat. I have purchased from Hong Kong several times and never had a problem. As mentioned be aware you may cop an import duty ( normaly only on more expensive items) and look at the postage cost, sometimes an item may be only 99p but £15 postage when you can buy the item here for £7-£8
Also open a paypal account and pay with that, it gives a lot more protection.

I bought 6 led lamps from Hong Kong in July. So far 4 out of the 6 have failed. It looks like I have no redress through Ebay because of the time. I cant even add some feedback.
If I had bought from a UK supplier I think I would stand more chance of getting some help from them.

You are right Clive. U.K. consumer law doesn't apply if bought from abroad, Our consumer law is actually better than most countries but have no fear, the E.U. is working on and trying to change that (surprise, surprise)

Again, the Scottish consumer laws are slightly different to ours and slightly inferior.

Definitely no. I bought a camcorder battery earlier this year, the seller did not even make it clear they were in Hong Kong until I e-mailed complaining about non delivery a month later. They then blamed customs for intercepting the package, but when I started complaining to e-bay it arrived a few days later.
It only worked for perhaps 3 months, but they just ignore any mails sent and as far as I can see there is nothing you can do to reclaim the cost.

I was a victim of phishing buying something on the internet with my card. Bank paid up and will hopefully track down the thief. Had it been Hong Kong the money could be lost forever

hi pat.
as with all things bought on Ebay you have to watch what you buy read the item description very closly as well as the postage costs as someone said earlier there in nothing wrong with buying from hongkong or china exept for the time delay in delivery . it can take 6 to 8 weeks instead of 2 to 3 days as with some uk suppliers.
a lot of my fishing end tackle and reels were from china and hong kong and I must say apart from the odd duff bit all have been suberb in quality for example I bought 1000 mixed swivels from china for £5 plus 4.99 postage they took 5 weeks to arrive on opening the package and sorting them into size and type found 18 duff ones or if you like 982 good ones for a tenner thats 1p each they were exactly the same as the ones I had been using @ £2.50 for 10 from the tackle shops.
on looking at a old packet of these swivels noticed in very small writing in one corner: "MADE IN CHINA".

Bought a nice 7 inch tv dvd player in 2005, it cost a shade over £120 does everything. Had no problems in obtaining it, but then my FIL had bought the same item 2 months earlier.
5 years later still going strong and still don't see anything here that does the exact same thing for under £200.

Given that most electronic gadgets are made in China, and most regardless of name are made at the same place, there are bargains to be had, but you do need to tread carefully though.....

I've bought quite a few bits from HK / China / Taiwan. Never had a problem yet BUT....I always pay using PAYPAL. They give you more consumer protection than other methods. Paypal payments can be reclaimed very easily and the seller has to show a proof of delivery if a dispute is raised.
