Edinburgh - Morton Hall CS, Comments?

We have a need to stay in/around Edinburgh in late August this year (28-30 Aug) so we checked the Caravan Club option to stay in at the Edinburgh CC Site and guess what it is fully booked (wonder how many will actually stay -vs- those who simply book dates on the 'its free so let me book it just in case' option) consequently we have had to exploit other options . . . and the site at Mortonhall, Edinburgh comes up as an option. OK it's a 4 star site but it is expensive at almost £35/night including awning and dog, so, my question is . . . has anybody stayed at this site? and, is it worth the exhorbitant nightly fees?

Let me have have your comments . . .

Stuart

PS: If only the CC would sort out its booking system (ie, deposits &/or windows to book) then we could avoid the bad practise of members block booking sites/dates on a just in case basis!!

If you changed your dates by one day you'd be OK.

I'm going to the CC Edinburgh site in May, plenty of spaces left. I don't think for one minute this site is as "booked" as say Chatsworth. Just a lot of people on holiday probably including Edinburgh as part of their Scottish tour.

Why don't you reserve 29 / 30 and then ring the wardens ad see if they can slip you into one of "secret spare pitches".

Best of luck.

Cheers

We stayed at Morton Hall when the lads were quite young(now in their 30's!). Access to Edinburgh was quite easy by bus. As it was our first visit to the city the bus ride into the centre is quite impressive if its a double decker. Don't remember so much about the campsite except the pitches were on a slight slope in places.

Mortonhall CS is situated in the south east corner of Edinburgh, just inside of the bypass. You leave the A720 bypass at the Lothianburn junction, turn towards Edinburgh, turn right after about 500 yards at the traffic lights at the top of the hill, and follow the signs. It is inside the Mortonhall Estate which is a large country area open to the public and has lots of bridle paths and walks for all animals (both 4 and 2 legged variety). It is very peaceful and hard to believe you are inside a city. It has a number of hardstanding pitches, 3 shower/toilet blocks and a shop on site. There is also an excellent bar/restaurant (Tables Bar) next door (excellent Caledonian 80 shilling ale). Just over the hill is a 9 hole municipal golf course, open to all. At the entrance is the Klondyke garden centre. Rosslyn Chapel is also on this side of town about 5 miles to the south. At Straiton on the south side of the bypass is a shopping area with a Sainsbury's and IKEA. Turn left leaving the site to the traffic lights junction, turn right towards the bypass and keep straight on and follow the signs. The same route leads to Rosslyn. A mile to the east along Frogston Road is the Gracemount Municipal Leisure Centre with swimming pool etc. Pretty good for kids on a wet day. Also in that area is the Hillend Country Park with a dry ski slope. And the Steadings Inn, excellent food.

As mentioned part of the site is sloped but nothing too excessive. However, in high season it can be full of tenters especially during August, but they are usually pitched at the back end of the site and have their own toilet shower block to ease the load. You mention the 28th onwards which is still just at the end of the Festival so will be very busy so I suggest you book now. As mentioned there is a bus stop at the estate entrance, although it is a good walk (500 yards) for those of an unfit nature. Look out for the Highland cattle in the field though. The buses run every 20 minutes (10/30/50 minutes of the hour) during the day (the stop heading to town is on the far side of the road from the campsite and about 100 yards to the left as you leave the site. The bus travels through Morningside into Princes Street where there are 3 stops. It will take 30 minutes. The service number is 11, but beware on return as alternate buses split at Fairmilehead crossroads. The destination should read 'Hyvots Bank', not Fairmilehead, or you will have a long walk. The correct bus usually has a notice board in the front cab area with Mortonhall Campsite on it. The 11 bus terminates at Ocean Terminal if visiting Britannia is on your 'to do' list. The single fare to town is

Yes, I did deliberately miss that one. The final 'day out' for all of us at some stage. I suppose I should also have included the Seafield sewage works, 'little Bagdad' in Broomhouse and the holiday hotel at Saughton, but one is trying to suggest the positives.

Scotch Lad,

I really do appreciate your very comprehensive outline of the Mortonhall site and Edinburgh travel, etc.

I note your view on the dullness of the CC site, what one might call a bit dead, whilst omitting to point out the crematorium at Morton Hall :)

The purpose of the visit is to attend the Scottish Kennel Club Dog Show which I now find is being held at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh - this venue provides its own Caravan pitches during the week of the show, so a new consideration is whether to 'slum-it' on the showground for a mere

Staying at Ingliston obviously has advantages, however do note that it is located right beside Edinburgh Airport which is a busy 24 hour airport. There are obviously very good links into town from the airport (airport bus every 15 minutes) but it is a good walk from the Showground along a road with no pavements, round to the Terminals, and it may be easier to use the Park and Ride at the entrance to the airport. Do check if they are offering any 'shuttle service'. If your trip is 100% doggy orientated, then stay at Ingliston, if it is only part of it and you wish to sight see, then it may be more peaceful away from that area. Also as you mention, although there are good toilets inside the Showground, I doubt if they have shower faciltiies. If you decide to stay away from Ingliston then both campsites have good access to the Showground, either from Silverknowes (CC Site) or round the Bypass from Mortonhall. However, as already mentioned at that time of the year everywhere is going to be very busy, so make a choice soon. Your other Plan C alternative is to take one of the sites a litle further out of Edinburgh, the C&CC has some, and drive in.

Guys,

No, we have not checked out Linwater but we now will most certainly do that. It could be the best solution - here's hoping.

Thanks All

Just had a look at Linwater ont' interweb and it looks really good - a site that is not overdeveloped & hugely commercial, more a site that strives to meet its customers needs and expects its customers to meet it halfway; exactly what we seek and wish to share with our fellow 'vanners/campers'
