I want to connect my van to the external weatherproof socket I had fitted by our electrician.
I know and have the adapter you connect to the caravan EHU lead. But the problem with this
is the blue connectors are always exposed to the elements. Which I'm concerned about.
So can I use the cable from a normal 13Amp rated extension lead (10metres= 30ft long) .
I can use the plugs from the adapter and the cable I already have, thus no joints in cable.

Or should I not be so tight and buy another EHU lead to convert????

Dunno Kev. Technical idiot me. What we do is plug the ehu and adaptor into a socket inside the garage and close the door on the cable. This keeps it dry and makes it far more difficult to nick. Don't suppose you have that option.

HELLO Kevin you young rascal.
How did the new awning go ?
Right here is what I did for hook from home I fitted and exterior weather proof socket to the wall of the house and then made up my own lead for the caravan.I think the hook up plug for the van was a couple of quid and when that socket is not in use I can plug the lawn mower into it so that her Ladyship can mow the lawns.

Hi there Ole Bean,
Nice to hear from you again, awning is awesome, just waiting for exchange of monsoon poles then I will be happy and contented once again.
Yes Ole chap can do what you have but I was just checking on the cable to see if it was suitable.
Take care

Hi Kev, my favourite Woosie,
Thinking about the ordinary EHUs they are open to the elements. The design is such that the contacts are a long way down the blue plastic and as they hang down so to speak any water probably doesn't get inside the plug as long as the rubber cable grip is corectly fitted.
Mine is connected at the moment from a water proof external power point. The internal supply to this powerpoint uses its own independent RCD thingy. I'm no spark but I don't think you have anything to worry about. I suppose you could house your external powerpoint in a plastic small meter type box , seal it and make it waterproof and run the orange cable out through the bottom??

Hello Kev,

The blue connectors are designed for being outside, that is there reason for being, so using your short extension (13A to 16A CEE FORM) is fine.

If you are really not happy then the cheapest way for an at home, is get a 13A extension and replace the socket with a blue female CEE FORM.

The thing to watch out for on 13A external sockets is that while the socket is watertight the plug that you use in them is very rarely so. If the electrician knew you were going to use the socket for the caravan I am surprised that he did not install a simple site type socket.

Hi Graham, the external waterproof socket was installed when I converted the garage, and before I had my van . It 's also used for the mower etc etc
