The nominal voltage in the UK was lowered to 230V in 2008 to harmonize with the rest of Europe, which had theirs raised from 220V to 230V. The tolerance was widened to +/- 10%, making the range 207V to 253V, so 189V is a bit low.

The voltage range currently stands at +10% and -6% giving a range of 216 to 253 volts. If outside this range you should raise a voltage complaint with your supplier. They are duty bound to look into this with some ergency. Out side of this range can result in damaged equipment especially modern electronic kit, DVD players computers, etc.

Stephen also forgot to say if your suffering from flickering lights or dimming lights this could be due to some one else connected to your local network that may be running motors, usually most common cause of Flickering aside from a loose connection on your suppliers system. When a motor starts up depending on type can take 6 times its running current when starting and flickering will depend on the application of the motor ie how often it starts up.

Hi IAN

Yes we have been suffering from flickering lights and dimming lights and it is happening all over the Worthing area. On sunday my wife was using the fan over the cooker and had to put it on position 3 to get it to work as if it was on position 1.Food takes longer to cook in the oven. I have asked around all over the borough every body seems to be having the same promlem.

Stephen,

Time to get your supplier in and encourage others with the same problem to de the same. Your more likely to ressolve the problem quicker if its more widespread.

good luck

Got some answers at last. The problems not only with electricity its gas pressure and water. The problem is they have built so many new homes down here and have conneced them into the services that at peck times it connot coupe with demand. As the gentlman said you can only keep taking so much out without installing new plant all the services were just couping with demand then the Gov started this new massive building program down here in the south and the infrastructure is giving up.

BROWN AGAIN.

Thanks chrisbeee for the link. But it shows nothing new, I mean this sort of thing has gone on for decades, and if its not a case of resource shortages ie electricity supplies then its something else.

My favourite [and again its not something new] is where they build new housing estates on what was really flood plains! What they actually do is make the housing estate flood proof, but instead end up causing flooding problems else where!!!

Just not totally convinced on whom to blame....suppose this GB guy sounds a good bet, regardless of if he is or is not to blame!!

Stephen.....I do not know how long you have lived in Worthing.

They built Durrington (part of Worthing) in the 1980's.

It promptly flooded due to all the new houses.

They then spent millions on a massive drainage system to correct the problem.

They will get it right one day

Lets put it this way Angmering had just 3.123 homes now 22,000. Rustington just gone of the scale.

Littlehampton had 16.698 homes now 31.295 and growing. Wick 5.000 homes now 19,501 and still growing. Durrington has just explowded out of control and now more homes on titnol lane area.

The new town at ford near Arundel 22,000 Pluse. I could go on but I think you get the idea whats going on down in this part of the country. They keep building BUT no new roads rail link etc.

there is only 3 ways over the downs A29 A24 A23 all A roads. The section of A27 that runs along from Bognor Regis to Brighton is just in a total grid lock most of the day. When it rains hard all the drains now in Ferring now pop and overflow with water into the streets.
