as a new traveller on long haul ferry crossings to Europe is it wise to disconnect the electrics at the socket as I don't know if I left it all connected it would run down my car battery, the ATC light would be on permanently. also the fridge would be on.

Agreed, the fridge shouldn't be working unless the car's engine is running. For what it's worth, I've always disconnected the lead from the car on ferry crossings - but I can't remember why!
It shouldn't be necessary because the relay in the towcar trips shortly after the engine is switched off as the charging voltage falls to normal however, were the relay to malfunction, the car would continue to power the fridge. For what it's worth, I remove my 12S plug on the Santander ferry crossing.
I disconnect my 13 pin plug, that way I know I won't have any problems when I get off in the morning.

For what it's worth I never unplug any electrics when using ferry crossings - can't see the need to,after 25 years of using ferriies to France and Spain it's never been a problem.Although one year we saw a car failing to start when unloading presumably the relay that switches the fridge on and off must have failed or has been wired incorrectly and left the fridge on overnight draining the car battery.
The ferry companies are usually ready for this because a crew member ran out with a battery and got the car started.
