Can anyone let me know what would be considered essential for us as we're just starting out and are a bit confused about what we actually need. Thank you in advance.

It depends where you want to start really, but here is a very basic list, others will add to it I am sure.
1. Caravan
2. Suitable tow car
3. Gas Cylinders to suit (Butane or propane)
4. Electric Hook Up Cable
5. Fresh and Waste Water Containers
6.Extension Mirrors for car
7.Bedding
8. Cooking utensils
9.Crockery to suit
10.Caravan Entrance Step
11.Leisure Battery

Thats a start at least

Fantastic thank you we'll make sure we have all those in the morning when we pick the caravan up, I'm sure you could go on buying things forever! Thanks again.

I should have included toilet chemical as well,
I would suggest that you just get the Blue cassette waste tank chemical, forget Thetford Pink for the flush tank, it causes more problems than it solves.
I would also suggest that given the option, go for Propane as it will work in all temperatures unlike Butane which stops supplying gas at around 3 or 4 degrees C.
Depending on the age of the van you are getting , if it has a bulkhead fixed regulator you will just need the correct "pigtail" (gas connection hose) for the type of gas you have.
If you have the older van with cylinder mounted regulator, you will need the correct regulator for the gas being used,.

We're going pretty close to home until we get used to everything I'm hoping some nice people will give us a hand if needed! We've got a good head start with camping equipment so quite a bit will transfer across for now until we work out how far we want to go with buying things....

Well just back from our first trip, just one night half an hour from home, towing wasn't as scary as I thought, managed to reverse onto pitch straight but too far to one side, think I misjudged how long it was! All in all to any newcomers take your time and it isn't that scary, lots of people willing to help on the caravan club site we were at too which is fantastic! Shocked at how many surprised people there were at the woman driving! Haha!
