We're not experts but we carry a small tool kit in a tupperware type box. Inside is a hammer (we sawed off some of the wooden handle so it would fit in the box!) small & large phillips and slot screwdrivers, tape measure (especially useful if you don't keep your van at home), pliers, adjustable spanner, bradawl and electricians tape. We also carry a small selection of screws, spare bulbs for all road lights, spare spotlight bulb, various batteries, a roll of duck tape (very useful for lots of things), fuses for the car towing electrics (used these twice!)and a head torch for helping with repairs in the dark. We've also recently added a lump hammer as we found our rubber mallet useless at hammering awning pegs into hardstanding pitches, especially in dry weather. Know some carry a spare water pump but we don't bother. We don't take a drill but know lots do to wind down corner steadies. It's a fine line between being prepared and weight-watching.

You'll find that you're very rarely stuck when needing a hand on site as caravanners are, on the whole, a very friendly and helpful bunch who rally round (pardon the pun!) to help fellow campers in crisis.

You can buy a basic toolkit in a nice plastic suitcase from a number of outlets. It will do evrything you are likely to need. However, many of us have become 'squirrels' with tools and bits and pieces and always carry that 'essential piece' that you might just need one sunny day. I purchased a bag from Machinemart and weighed it the other day. I guess it comes in at about 20 kg, so yes, I have more than my share of junk in there. Do I need all of it?? Probably not, but my old fashioned ideas keep telling me that you never know when that extra washer/nut/hose fitting wil be needed. Sorry, I am an old fashioned guy and I still have a pair of nylons in there just in case the fan belt breaks. Of course, I could wear them myself???
