Has anyone the got the same problem as us with exhaust fumes inside the caravan after towing, which causes not only an awful smell when entering the caravan but black deposits on every surface. We also find the back of the caravan is covered with black sooty deposits after towing. We tow with a Mitsubishi Pajero that we have fitted with an exhaust deflector (downwards) but this has not solved the problem. Our previous outfit was an Eldiss/Shogun and we did not have this problem until we changed to Coachman/Pajero. Help

Hello Lesley,

I don't think that the combination of Coachman/Pajero is the problem as we had this outfit until recently (just changed our car to a Shogun) and we didn't have this problem.

Are the seals on the caravan windows OK? If they are worn or perished, this could lead to fumes/dust getting inside.

Alternatively, is there any way it could be getting in through the wet locker?

You are doing the correct thing by having a downflow pipe on your exhaust which is supposed to minimise the soot problem. I would imagine the back of the van is getting dirty because the soot coming from the exhaust is flowing under the van and getting caught in an updraft when it exits from underneath.

You could try using an oil additive such as Diesel Low Smoke which reduces exhaust smoke. There's a range of fuel additives such as this including Diesel Magic which cleans the fuel injectors when the get glogged up with deposits. You can get these from Halfords or any other motorists shops, even some supermarkets.
