Hello Simon,

If you need to ask how to do this, then you must not be familiar with mains voltage safety and wiring.

My earnest resposne is to refer the job to a competent electician, who will be able to not only fit and check the new socket but issue a certificate of conformance for insurance purposes.

Thanks John. I am familiar with domestic and industrial electrical systems but have never worked with caravan electrics before. I was wondering whether caravan electrics ran on ring circuits similar to domestic, or were set up on spur outlets from the consumer unit ? Also what cable size to use for any volt drop and fuse sizes - whether you would take a new supply from the unit or could take a spur from another socket ?

Simon, it is, as you are conversant with electrical installations, an easy matter of taking a spur from an existing socket to the new one you install.

Caravans do not employ a ring main system.

Part P regs do not apply to caravans, as they are not classed as residential dwellings, unless a static van.

I have added sockets to all of my previous 'vans. I agree as above and use 2.5mm cable as in theory a single socket can pass 10amps which the circuit breaker is rated at.

Simon

I am not sure of the exact price as there was other work done at the same time. I do remember that the sockets themselves were only a couple of quid. It was only the cast of actually fitting that was extra

Hi Simon.

I had the same need in my Ranger. What i did was buy an extension lead and plug it into the fridge socket under the front bunk with an adaptor so the fridge was plugged in as well. I found that i could thread the extension cable along the underside of the bunk and out at the end without trapping it. Best of all, you can disconnect it at will so it's all safe and legal. Mine is a two socket end so we can plug a lamp in as well.

Quick, cheap, safe and simple.
