Ferries and sites in france

Hi Just to see if really we do need to pre book ferry and sites when going to france or if you can just turn up at ferry port etc (thinking of Dover - Calais)

and what are the chances of getting on sites in france in August, hubby in middle of changing jobs so had to change our original holiday which we had booked with select sites and so far unsure of the dates we will be travelling, many thanks

Dover Calais routes you can turn up normally and they will get you on a ferry within an hour or two. Caravan because of the height means you travel with trucks and coaches, if there is a lot of freight crossing you could have a wait for a space. Other routes I would say you are takig a big risk! I've known people who have missed an end August ferry from the Britany ports driving to Calais and having to pay again to get home on time.

If you just turn up expect to pay TOP price for your crossing, and that is likely to be upto about

ps. We have travelled in France in August and just phoned the day before to find sites. But you may have to make a few calls and be flexible on where you want to go!

If you are a member of Caravan Club or CCC you can ring up days before you go and pick up tickets at the port ticket desk.

If you are not a member, I would recommend you join as the saving on your crossing could easily be more then the annual subs.
